Gustavus claims 2-1 win over Augsburg in first game of series.

ST. PETER, Minn. (11/30/01) -- Jerod Klava (So., Fargo, N.D.) scored two goals, including the eventual game-winner on an unassisted power-play goal, to give host Gustavus Adolphus College a 2-1 win over Augsburg College in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference men's hockey game Friday night at the Don Roberts Ice Rink.

Klava's power-play goal, at the 5:58 mark of the second period, was enough for the Gusties to improve to 3-4-0 overall, 3-2-0 in the MIAC. Augsburg drops to 3-4-1 oveall, 1-2-0 in the MIAC.

Klava scored his first goal at the 12:57 mark of the first period, on assists from Lucas Ahlberg (So., Worthington, Minn.) and Joe Ulwelling (Fr., Warroad, Minn.). Augsburg tied the score six minutes later, when Jaro Cesky (Jr., Prague, Czech Republic) scored an unassisted goal, his team-high seventh goal of the season. Klava scored on the power play, on assists from Ulwelling and Kyle Menken (Fr., Plymouth, Minn.), to cap the scoring.

Augsburg outshot Gustavus by a 24-21 margin in the evenly-played game. Dan Melde (So., Maplewood, Minn.) made 23 saves to claim the win in goal for the Gusties, while Peter Samargia (Jr., Gilbert, Minn./Eveleth-Gilbert HS) made 19 saves for the Auggies.

The teams complete their two-game MIAC series on Saturday night (12/1) at 7 p.m. at the Augsburg Ice Arena.
