MINNEAPOLIS (11/30/01) -- Emily Kearns (So., Hopkins, Minn.) and Jaimie Mussehl (Fr., South St. Paul, Minn.) scored first-period goals, and Missie Meemken (Jr., St. Cloud, Minn./Apollo HS) made 28 saves, as St. Mary's University claimed a 2-1 win over host Augsburg College in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference women's hockey game Friday night at the Augsburg Ice Arena.
St. Mary's improved to 3-1-1 overall and 2-0-1 in the MIAC with the win, their fifth straight over Augsburg in the all-time series (St. Mary's leads 5-2-1). Augsburg drops to 2-6 overall and 1-2 in MIAC play, dropping its third game in a row.
All three goals in the game were scored in a four-minute span late in the first period. Kearns scored on an assist from Tasa Kostel (So., Rochester, Minn./Mayo HS) at the 14:08 mark, followed at the 18:16 mark by Mussehl's goal, on an assist from Monica Deringer (Jr., Brooklyn Park, Minn./Park Center HS). Augsburg cut the lead to 2-1 10 seconds after Mussehl's goal, when
Melynda Kleewein (Fr., Anchorage, Alaska/Dimond HS) scored her first collegiate goal on an unassisted shot off a turnover.
St. Mary's outshot Augsburg by a 17-7 margin in the first period, but the Auggies controlled the shots after that, outshooting St. Mary's by a 22-9 margin the rest of the game. Both goalies played solid games, with Meemken making 28 saves -- including 13 in the third period.
Katie Fedoryk (So., Austin, Minn.) made 24 saves in a losing effort for the Auggies.
The teams finish their MIAC series on Saturday (12/1) at 2:05 p.m. at the SMU Ice Arena in Winona, Minn.
