Augsburg gets first win, 3-2 at Marian (Wis.)

FOND DU LAC, Wis. (11/4/01) -- Scoring two goals in a 46-second span of the third period, Augsburg College claimed a 3-2 win over Marian College in a nonconference men's hockey game Sunday afternoon at the FDL Blue Line Family Ice Center.

Augsburg moved to 1-0-1 with the win, while Marian remained winless with an 0-4-1 mark.

After a scoreless first period, the Sabres were the first team to light the lamp as Andy Allen (Virginia, Minn.) scored his team-leading third goal of the season just 1:48 into the second period. The Auggies would tie things up at one when Frank Huebner (Sr., Northfield, Minn.) beat the stick-less Sabre goalie after a flurry in front of the net to knot the contest at one with with a power-play goal.

Augsburg put the game away when they scored two goals in a 46-second span of the third period, from Nick Murray (Sr., Bloomington, Minn.) and Joe Pontrelli (So., Eagan, Minn.). The Sabres' Brad Hawkins (Nepean, Ontario) added a power-play tally of his own with 3:17 left in the game, but Marian could not find the net again.

Auggie goalie Peter Samargia (Jr., Gilbert, Minn./Eveleth-Gilbert HS) continued his hot weekend play by saving 34-of-36 Sabre shots-on-goal. Marian goalie Terry Dunbar (Duluth, Minn.) made 34 saves in the contest and took the loss despite a solid outing.

Augsburg opens Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play next weekend with a two-game series against St. John's. Saturday's (11/10) game is at the Augsburg Ice Arena at 7 p.m., and Sunday's (11/11) game is at the National Hockey Center in St. Cloud, Minn., at 2 p.m. The Sabres will look to get their first victory of the season next weekend when they head to Milwaukee on Saturday (11/10) to take on the MSOE Raiders in their first MCHA conference game of the season. The puck is set to drop at 7:30 p.m..
