MINNEAPOLIS (12/1/01) -- Justin Davis (So., St. Francis, Minn.) scored two goals and Dan Melde (So., Maplewood, Minn.) made 42 saves to record his first shutout of the season, as Gustavus Adolphus College completed a series sweep of Augsburg College with a 3-0 win in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference men's hockey game Saturday night at the Augsburg Ice Arena.
The sweep, Gustavus' first over Augsburg since the 1996-97 season, lifted the Gusties to 4-4 overall and 4-2 in MIAC play. Augsburg drops to 3-5-1 overall and 1-3 in MIAC play, losing its fourth game in a row.
The Gusties connected on two of its three power plays in the game, with Craig Jankowski (Fr., Ely, Minn.) scoring on a power play 58 seconds into the second period and Davis netting his second goal of the game with a power-play tally with 18 seconds left in the second period. Davis' first goal, at the 8:41 mark of the first period, came just two seconds after the end of another Gustie power play.
Gustavus won despite being outshot by a 42-24 margin, including a 17-4 mark in the first period, as Melde was tested often by the Auggies. Peter Samargia (Jr., Gilbert, Minn./Eveleth-Gilbert HS) made 21 saves for Augsburg.
Adam Moseley (Jr., Orono, Minn.), Sam Johnson (So., Grand Rapids, Minn.) and Matt Logan (Jr., Bloomington, Minn.) had two assists apiece for the Gusties.
Both teams are in nonconference action next weekend. Augsburg hosts Northland (Wis.) in a two-game series, Friday (12/7) at 7 p.m. and Saturday (12/8) at 2 p.m., both at the Augsburg Ice Arena. Gustavus plays at Wisconsin-Eau Claire Friday at 7 p.m. and at Wisconsin-Stevens Point Saturday at 7:35 p.m.
