Women's Basketball 12/10/01 -- Augsburg 64, St. Olaf 58 (OT)
BOXSCORE
MINNEAPOLIS (12/10/01) --
Rowena Sizer * (Sr., Rochester, Minn./Mayo HS) scored a career-high 21 points and had six rebounds and three steals, while
Kelly Chapman (So., Willernie, Minn./Mahtomedi HS) notched her second double-double of the season with 10 points and 12 rebounds, as Augsburg College claimed a 64-58 overtime victory over St. Olaf College in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference women's basketball game Monday night at Augsburg's Si Melby Hall.
Augsburg broke a six-game losing streak to improve to 2-6 overall and 1-4 in MIAC play. Both of Augsburg's wins this season have come in overtime on the Auggies' home court, the first a 76-70, two-overtime win over Coe (Iowa) in the season-opener Nov. 18. St. Olaf drops to 4-4 overall and 2-3 in MIAC play.
The game featured nine ties and 18 lead changes, with neither team leading by more than seven points during the contest. It was the second straight year that Augsburg and St. Olaf have played an overtime on Augsburg's home court; last year, Augsburg won 90-89 in three overtimes.
Augsburg led by five points, 56-51, with 48 seconds remaining in regulation. But St. Olaf rallied to tie the game, behind a three-pointer from Carrie Cooley (Sr., Villard, Minn./Minnewaska Area HS) with 38 seconds left and a layup by Liz Mundahl (Jr., Eagan, Minn.) with 25 seconds left. The game entered overtime tied at 56-56.
Augsburg outscored St. Olaf 8-2 in the extra session, with Augsburg hitting six of 10 free throws. However, poor free throw shooting for the Auggies -- 13-of-26, 50 percent -- kept the Oles in the game.
Sizer's 21 points bettered her previous career high of 15, and was the fourth time this season she has scored in double figures. Chapman's double-double was her second of the season and of her Auggie career, and the sixth time in Augsburg's eight games this season she has scored in double figures.
Julie Andert (So., Eden Prairie, Minn.) came off the bench to match a career high with 11 points, while pulling down six rebounds.
Carrie Schwartz * (Sr., Hutchinson, Minn.) nearly had a double-double, scoring nine points with 10 rebounds, three steals, three blocked shots and five assists.
Ashley Sasek (Fr., Waukesha, Wis./Kettle Moraine HS) scored nine points and added six rebounds and five assists.
Cara Battles (Sr., McGregor, Minn.) paced St. Olaf with 14 points and four assists. Jill Johnson (So., Butterfield, Minn./St. James HS) had a double-double, with 10 points and 11 rebounds, and Mundahl scored 10 points to go with five rebounds. Lori Enlund (So., Bloomington, Ill./Normal HS) had eight points, 12 rebounds and five blocked shots.
Both teams take a break for the holidays before returning to MIAC action on Jan. 2 at 7:30 p.m., Augsburg hosting Macalester and St. Olaf hosting Bethel.
