MINNEAPOLIS (12/7/01) --
Jaro Cesky (Jr., Prague, Czech Republic) scored a three-goal hat trick and
Patrick Hook (So., Monticello, Minn.) scored the first two goals of his collegiate career as Augsburg College cruised to a 10-0 win over Northland College (Wis.) in a nonconference men's hockey game Friday night at the Augsburg Ice Arena.
Augsburg improved to 4-5-1 overall with the win, breaking a four-game losing streak in the process. Northland, with just 13 skaters and two goalies in uniform on Friday, dropped to 3-7-0 overall, losing its sixth (non-exhibition) game in a row.
The hat trick was the first of Cesky's Auggie career, giving him a team-leading 10 goals on the season. He has led the Auggies in scoring each of his two prior seasons.
Augsburg jumped on the depleted Lumberjacks early and often, scoring five goals in the first period and outshooting the visitors by a 54-17 margin in the game.
Jan Lasek (Sr., Krupka, Czech Republic/New Prague, Minn., HS) scored his first collegiate varsity goal to open the scoring for the Auggies, followed by goals from
Joe Johnson (Sr., Ramsey, Minn./Anoka HS),
Brad Keogh (Jr., Lake Shore, Minn./Mankato West HS), Hook and Cesky.
Brad Schwartzbauer (Sr., White Bear, Minn.) scored on the power play 35 seconds into the second period, followed by goals from
Brad Holzinger (Jr., North Oaks, Minn./Hill-Murray HS), Hook and Cesky. Cesky completed the scoring with his hat trick goal four minutes into the final frame.
Cesky had a four-point night, adding an assist. Holzinger also had a four-point night, with his goal and three assists.
Jake Wegscheider (Sr., Little Canada, Minn./Roseville HS) and
Brad Bjorgum (So., Apple Valley, Minn./Eastview HS) had three assists apiece, with
Chad Moore (Jr., Lakeville, Minn.) adding two assists.
Peter Samargia (Jr., Gilbert, Minn./Eveleth-Gilbert HS) notched his first Auggie shutout in goal, recording 17 saves in the win.
Northland used two goalies in the game, with starter Billy Ferkol (So., Parma, Ohio) making 23 saves and Wendell Roy Jr. (Fr., Wales, Mich.) making 21 saves.
The teams complete the nonconference series Saturday afternoon (12/8) at 2 p.m. at the Augsburg Ice Arena.
