Augsburg slams Northland (Wis.) 11-2 behind two hat tricks!

MINNEAPOLIS (12/8/01) -- Nick Murray (Sr., Bloomington, Minn./Holy Angels HS) and Brad Schwartzbauer (Sr., White Bear, Minn.) each recorded three-goal hat tricks for Augsburg College, as the Auggies cruised to an easy 11-2 win over Northland College (Wis.) in a nonconference men's hockey game Saturday afternoon at the Augsburg Ice Arena.

Both Auggies had four-point nights, adding an assist apiece, as Augsburg improved to 5-5-1 overall. Augsburg outscored Northland by a 21-2 margin over the weekend. Northland drops to 3-8-0 overall, losing its seventh (non-exhibition) game in a row.

After spotting the Lumberjacks the first goal of the game three minutes into play, Augsburg reverted to the form that produced a 10-0 win on Friday, outshooting the Lumberjacks by a 53-22 margin. In the two-game series, Augsburg outshot Northland by a 107-39 margin.

Murray and Schwartzbauer each picked up their hat tricks in the first two periods, as Augsburg built an 8-1 advantage. Brian Johnson (Fr., Bloomington, Minn./Jefferson HS) scored his first collegiate goal for the Auggies, and Frank Huebner (Sr., Northfield, Minn.) had the other Auggie goals in the first two periods.

Jaro Cesky (Jr., Prague, Czech Republic) had a goal and two assists, giving him a team-leading 11 goals and 17 points this season. Shawn Carney (Sr., International Falls, Minn.) and Joe Johnson (Sr., Ramsey, Minn./Anoka HS) had the other Auggie goals in the third period.

Augsburg was 4-for-10 on the power-play in the physical game, as the teams combined for 25 penalties for 59 minutes. Johnson had a three-point night, as did Cesky and David May (Fr., Burnsville, Minn.) and Jake Wegscheider (Sr., Little Canada, Minn./Roseville HS). May and Wegscheider contributed three assists each.

Wes Reid (Fr., Williams Lake, B.C.) and Jeff Frey (Sr., Wausau, Wis.) had the goals for Northland.

Steffan Braunlich (Fr., Playa Del Rey, Calif.), making his second collegiate start, picked up the win in goal with 20 saves. Wendell Roy Jr. (Fr., Wales, Mich.) took the loss, playing the first two periods and making 26 saves. Billy Ferkol (So., Parma, Ohio) relieved him, making 16 saves in the third period.

Augsburg returns to action with nonconference games next weekend, hosting Wisconsin-Stout on Friday (12/14) at 7 p.m. at the Augsburg Ice Arena and playing at Wisconsin-Stout on Saturday (12/15) at 7:30 p.m..
