Women's Basketball 2/1/01 -- Augsburg 73, Hamline 64
ST. PAUL, Minn. (2/1/01) --
Jaime Kingsley (Sr., Harmony, Minn./Fillmore Central HS) scored 19 points and pulled down seven rebounds, leading Augsburg College to its ninth win of the season, beating host Hamline University 73-64 in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference women's basketball contest Thursday night at Hamline's Hutton Arena.
Augsburg moved to 9-8 overall and 7-7 in the MIAC with the win, its best women's basketball record since the 1986-87 campaign, when the Auggies finished 10-15 overall (8-14 MIAC). The Auggies have seven games remaining in the regular season. Augsburg has had just seven seasons of nine or more victories since starting its intercollegiate varsity program in the 1972-73 season. Augsburg's best-ever regular-season record in its varsity years is a 14-11 campaign (11-9 MIAC) in 1983-84.
Hamline drops to 3-14 overall and 3-11 in the MIAC.
Augsburg used another strong first half to produce the victory. Augsburg led 37-29 at halftime, keying on 48 percent field-goal shooting (15-of-31). Augsburg also went to the free-throw line 35 times in the contest, nailing 23 shots. The Auggies forced 22 Hamline turnovers in the game while committing just 18.
Carrie Schwartz (Jr., Hutchinson, Minn.) was the team's leader at the charity stripe, connecting on 10-of-12 free throws and scoring 16 points. She led the team with eight rebounds.
Rowena Sizer (Jr., Rochester, Minn./Mayo HS) had 12 points and
Erin Brockberg (Sr., Pipestone, Minn./Pipestone-Jasper HS) notched eight points, six assists, four steals and five rebounds.
Kelly Chapman (Fr., Willernie, Minn./Mahtomedi HS) also scored eight points.
Hamline was paced by Stacey Thill (Jr., Parkville, Mo.), who led all scorers with 20 points. Amanda Kopischke (Fr., Mankato, Minn.) had 10 points, while Katie Jensen (Jr., Hutchinson, Minn.) and Sarah Wishard (Jr., Somerset, Wis.) had eight points apiece.
Both teams return to MIAC action on the road on Saturday (2/3/01) at 3 p.m. Augsburg plays at St. Mary's, while Hamline plays at St. Catherine.
