Women's Basketball 2/12/01 -- Augsburg 58, St. Olaf 56
NORTHFIELD Minn. (2/12/01) --
Jaime Kingsley (Sr., Harmony, Minn./Fillmore Central HS) scored 20 points to lead Augsburg College to a history-making women's basketball victory, a 58-56 triumph over host St. Olaf College in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference game Monday night at St. Olaf's Skoglund Center.
With the win, Augsburg broke a four-game losing streak and improved to 10-12 overall and 8-11 in MIAC play. The 10 wins marks the school's first 10-win campaign in 15 seasons, since a 10-15 finish in the 1986-87 season. Augsburg has had just five double-digit victory seasons since the varsity intercollegiate program was started in 1972-73. Augsburg's eight MIAC wins is also the first time Augsburg has reached that plateau since the 1986-87 season (8-14).
Augsburg remains in the hunt for a berth in the MIAC's first-ever six-team postseason playoffs. Augsburg is currently a game behind St. Mary's (10-12 overall, 9-10 MIAC) and two games behind Gustavus Adolphus (13-9 overall, 10-9 MIAC) in the race for the final two playoff berths. St. Thomas, Carleton, St. Benedict and Concordia-Moorhead have already clinched the top four playoff berths.
Augsburg finishes its season hosting Bethel (4-18 overall, 4-15 MIAC) on Wednesday (2/14) at 7:30 p.m., and playing at Gustavus in the only meeting of the season between the two schools on Saturday (2/17) at 3 p.m. St. Mary's, which holds a tiebreaker advantage over Augsburg by virtue of sweeping the Auggies in the teams' two meetings, plays at Macalester (6-16 overall, 4-15 MIAC) on Wednesday (5:30 p.m.) and finishes the season Saturday at St. Benedict. Gustavus plays at Hamline on Wednesday before hosting Augsburg on Saturday.
With the loss to the Auggies, St. Olaf was eliminated from the playoff race based on tiebreaker criteria.
Augsburg rallied from a 30-27 halftime deficit by a strong shooting effort, hitting 46.2 percent (12-of-26) from the field in the second half. Augsburg also outrebounded St. Olaf by a 51-45 margin, including 29 offensive rebounds.
Julie Andert (Fr., Eden Prairie, Minn.) came off the bench to score 11 points and claim seven rebounds for the Auggies, while
Liz Meskan (Sr., New Prague, Minn.) had seven points and
Kelly Chapman (Fr., Willernie, Minn./Mahtomedi HS) and
Carrie Schwartz (Jr., Hutchinson, Minn.) had six points each. Schwartz added seven rebounds.
Rowena Sizer (Jr., Rochester, Minn./Mayo HS) had five points and seven rebounds.
St. Olaf was paced by Lisa Eidenschink (So., Detroit Lakes, Minn.), who had a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds, and Elisa Hatlevig (Sr., Rushford, Minn.), who scored 12 points and pulled down seven rebounds. Lori Enlund (Fr., Bloomington, Ill.) had eight points and eight rebounds.
