Women's Basketball 2/17/01 -- Gustavus 65, Augsburg 50
ST. PETER, Minn. (2/17/01) -- The Gustavus Adolphus College women's basketball team finished its regular season and qualified for the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference postseason playoffs with a convincing 65-50 win over Augsburg College at Gustavus' Gus Young Court in St. Peter on Saturday afternoon.
The Gusties were led by sophomore post Kelly Etzel, who made 11-of-14 field goals and scored 26 points.
Jaime Kingsley (Sr., Harmony, Minn./Fillmore Central HS) led Augsburg with 18 points and 13 rebounds, her third double-double of the season.
Rowena Sizer (Jr., Rochester, Minn./Mayo HS) had three 3-pointers and finished with 17 points.
The victory allowed Gustavus to finish in fifth place in the MIAC with a record of 11-10 and qualify for the MIAC postseason playoffs. The Gusties will play at Concordia-Moorhead on Monday (Feb. 19) at 7:30 p.m. Gustavus improves to 14-10 overall and 11-10 in the MIAC.
Augsburg finishes its season at 11-13 overall and 9-12 in the MIAC, the school's best mark in both overall and MIAC play since the 1984-85 season (13-11 overall, 11-9 MIAC).
Augsburg got off to a quick start in the contest and led by as many as seven points in the first half at 24-17. The Gusties rallied with a 8-0 run late in the half to take a 25-24 lead at the intermission.
Gustavus opened the second half with a 15-0 run and pushed its lead to 16 (40-24) at the 14:12 mark. The Gusties extended their lead to as many as 19 points at 54-35 with 8:15 remaining in the contest. The Auggies rallied to cut the lead to 10 at 57-47 with 2:51 remaining, however that was as close as they would get and Gustavus went on to post the 65-50 victory.
