ST. PAUL, Minn. (2/5/01) -- Junior guard Missy Pederson had 15 points and four assists as the host University of St. Thomas Tommies (17-2 overall, 14-2 MIAC) moved back into a first-place tie in the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference women's basketball race with an 80-51 victory over Augsburg College (9-10, 7-9) Monday night in Schoenecker Arena.
The win clinched an MIAC playoff berth for the Tommies and ran their series winning streak against the Auggies to 32 games.
Junior Alissa Case had 14 points and four steals and junior Jennifer Ulstad added 11 points for the Toms, who made 16 of 18 at the line in the second half and shot 50 percent (26-of-52) from the field on the game.
Rowena Sizer (Jr., Rochester, Minn./Rochester Mayo HS) scored 11 points off the bench and Jaime Kingsley (Sr., Harmony, Minn./Fillmore Central HS) had eight points and seven rebounds to lead the Auggies.
UST's victory, coupled with Carleton's 69-64 home-court win over previous conference leader St. Benedict, created a three-way tie among St. Thomas, Carleton and St. Benedict for the MIAC lead at 14-2 with five games to play. Concordia-Moorhead sits one-half game back at 14-3 with four games left.
The Toms broke to a 15-2 lead in the first six minutes of play. Augsburg climbed back into the game and pulled within 36-28 on Kelly Chapman's (Fr., Willernie, Minn./Mahtomedi HS) 3-pointer with 1:21 left in the first half. But the Toms scored the last five points of the half to lead 41-28 at halftime, then used a 14-0 run in the second half to build 63-35 lead with 9:50 to play.
Augsburg returns to action Wednesday (2/7) at 7:30 p.m. hosting St. Catherine at Si Melby Hall; St. Thomas hosts Concordia-Moorhead Wednesday at 5:30 p.m.
