MINNEAPOLIS (2/6/01) --
Angie Rieger (Sr., Courtland, Minn./New Ulm Public HS) scored twice in a 16-second-span in the second period, highlighting an offensive explosion for the Augsburg College women's hockey team, as the Auggies scored the first six goals of the game en route to a 6-2 win over the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point in a nonconference game Tuesday night at Augsburg Ice Arena.
Augsburg improves to 9-10-0 overall, while Wisconsin-Stevens Point falls to 12-8-1 overall. The Pointers are currently in second place in the Northern Collegiate Hockey Association. Augsburg has won four of its last six games, and broke a two-game losing streak with the win.
The Auggies outshot the Pointers by a 40-21 margin, and made easy work of the first two periods.
Dottie Gilkerson (Fr., Somerset, Wis.) opened the scoring with an unassisted tally, followed by a power-play goal from
Annie Mattison (Fr., Anchorage, Alaska/Anchorage East HS).
Stephanie Johnson (Sr., Champlin, Minn./Anoka HS) scored her 12th goal of the season at the 2:55 mark of the second period. Rieger notched her team-high 15th and 16th goals, both on power-play situations eight minutes into the second period.
Amber Nadreau (Sr., Anchorage, Alaska/Grace Christian HS) closed the Auggie scoring with her eighth goal of the season.
Johnson added two assists for a three-point night for the Auggies, while Gilkerson and Mattison each added an assist for two-point nights.
Wisconsin-Stevens Point claimed two third-period goals, from Jessica Barrick (So., Mosinee, Wis.) and Ashley Gregory (Jr., Stevens Point, Wis.).
Diane Sawyer (Fr., Stillwater, Minn.) made 34 saves in a losing effort in goal for the Pointers, while
Katie Fedoryk (Fr., Austin, Minn.) picked up the win with 19 saves in goal for the Auggies.
Augsburg faces Hamline in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference onference series Thursday (2/8) and Friday (2/9). Thursday's game is at 8:30 p.m. at the State Fair Coliseum, while Friday's game is at 7:05 p.m. at the Augsburg Ice Arena. Wisconsin-Stevens Point has the upcoming weekend off before hosting Wisconsin-Superior in a two-game NCHA series Feb. 16-17. Both games are at 5:05 p.m. at the K.B. Willett Arena in Stevens Point, Wis.
