Men's Hockey 2/9/01 -- St. Olaf 5, Augsburg 4
NORTHFIELD, Minn. (2/9/01) -- Jeff Simison (Sr., Moorhead, Minn.) scored two second-period goals and added an assist, leading the St. Olaf College men's hockey team to a surprising 5-4 victory over Augsburg College in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference contest Friday night at the Northfield Ice Arena.
Simison did his damage in the first two periods before being ejected from the contest late in the second frame on a game-disqualification penalty after a major infraction for checking from behind.
Despite being outshot by a 42-28 margin in the contest, St. Olaf claimed the win and improves to 8-13-1 overall and 4-8-1 in MIAC play, while Augsburg drops to 10-10-2 overall and 7-5-1 in the MIAC.
The loss dealt a serious blow to Augsburg's hopes of receiving a home playoff series in the four-team MIAC playoffs. Five teams are in the running for the four available spots, and Augsburg is in a fourth-place tie with St. John's. Both have 15 points after Friday night's play (St. John's hosts St. Mary's in a two-game series Saturday and Sunday). Bethel has 17 points, Concordia-Moorhead has 19 points and St. Thomas has 22 points after Friday's action.
Trailing 3-1 entering the third period on Chad Zwerdling's (Jr., Anoka, Minn.) tally in the first frame and Simison's two second-period goals, Augsburg scored twice in the first eight minutes to tie the game, behind goals from
Chad Moore (So., Lakeville, Minn.) and
Shawn Smith (So., Temagami, Ont./E.C. Drury HS). But the Oles took the lead back at the 12:07 mark, when Brian Meyer (So., Sun Prairie, Wis.) scored an unassisted goal.
Adam Will (Sr., Lino Lakes, Minn./White Bear Lake HS) added an empty-net goal with 36 seconds remaining to give the Oles a 5-3 cushion. Andy Shermoen's (Sr., International Falls, Minn.) goal with three seconds left completed the scoring.
Ness and Shermoen both added assists for two-point nights for the Auggies, while Craig Newman (Jr., Eagan, Minn.) had two assists for the Oles.
Ryan McIntosh (Sr., Calgary, Alberta/Bishop Grandin HS) made 23 saves for the Auggies; Jake Bullard (So., Bloomington, Minn./Jefferson HS) made 38 saves in net for the Oles.
The teams conclude their MIAC series on Saturday (2/10) at 7 p.m. at the Augsburg Ice Arena.
