Men's Soccer 9/15/01 -- Millikin (Ill.) 1, Augsburg 0
MINNEAPOLIS (9/15/01) -- Nicholas Elder (Sr., Decatur, Ill./Eisenhower HS) knocked in a loose ball in front of the net early in the second half Saturday, the only goal Millikin University would need in claiming a 1-0 win over Augsburg College in a nonconference men's soccer contest at Augsburg's Edor Nelson Field.
Elder's goal came off a feed to the box from Brett Linn (So., Burmbannais, Ill./Bradley-Bourbannais HS) in the 53rd minute. Elder leaped to head the ball as Augsburg goalkeeper
Nick Shill (So., Eau Claire, Wis./Eau Claire North HS) and an Augsburg teammate also jumped to knock the ball away. The three players collided, the ball trickled to the right and Elder escaped from the pack to knock the loose ball into the empty net.
Millikin, of the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin, improved to 3-1 on the season, while Augsburg dropped to 2-1-1 overall.
The goal was the lone tally in what was otherwise a fairly even game between the two schools. Though Millikin outshot the Auggies by a 15-8 margin, there were few legitimate scoring chances for either team in the contest. Augsburg had five corner kicks to Millikin's four.
Shill made seven saves, while Millikin goalkeeper Ted Schneller (So., Decatur, Ill./Stephen Decatur HS) made two saves to notch the shutout.
Augsburg opens Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play on Wednesday (9/19) with a 4 p.m. contest at St. Mary's University. Millikin plays at Loras College in Dubuque, Iowa, on Sunday (9/16) at 3 p.m.
