Men's Soccer 9/26/01 -- Concordia-Moorhead 2, Augsburg 1 (OT)
MINNEAPOLIS (9/26/01) -- Concordia College-Moorhead gained a victory on an own goal, as an Augsburg College player deflected a cross by Dustin Allard (Fr., Helena, Mont./Capital HS) into the Auggie net in the third minute of overtime, lifting the Cobbers to a 2-1 victory over Augsburg in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference men's soccer game Wednesday evening at Augsburg's Edor Nelson Field.
Allard was playing the ball to the deep left part of the Augsburg box and fired a crossing shot across the goal mouth. An Augsburg player deflected the shot back towards the net, and it trickled past the Auggie goalkeeper into the net, ending the game in favor of the Cobbers.
Concordia improved to 5-1 overall and 1-1 in MIAC play with the win, while Augsburg dropped its fourth game in a row in falling to 2-4-1 overall and 0-3 in MIAC play.
Allard scored on a long breakaway sprint, on feeds from Brandon Topp (Jr., Fargo, N.D./South HS) and Chance Buzzell (Sr., Anoka, Minn.) to give the Cobbers the lead in the 36th minute, but the Auggies tied the game in the 76th minute, when
Matt Lachner (So., Maple Grove, Minn.) scored on a penalty kick.
The game was a relatively even affair, with Concordia outshooting Augsburg 22-18. Kris Overby (So., Fargo, N.D./South HS) made seven saves to score the win for the Cobbers, while
Nick Shill (So., Eau Claire, Wis./Eau Claire North HS) made 11 saves for Augsburg. The game was a physical one, as the teams combined for 37 fouls.
Concordia returns to action with a Saturday (9/29) contest, hosting St. Olaf at 2 p.m. Augsburg returns to action next Wednesday (10/3), hosting Carleton at 7 p.m. at Edor Nelson Field.
