Men's Hockey 1/11/02 -- Augsburg 7, Concordia-Moorhead 5

MOORHEAD, Minn. (1/11/02) -- Concordia College-Moorhead dug itself a 5-1 hole in the second period and could never recover, losing 7-5 to visiting Augsburg College in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference men's hockey game Friday night at the Moorhead Sports Center.

The Cobbers were outscored 3-0 in the middle frame, pushing a 2-1 deficit at the end of one period to a four-goal deficit heading into the final period. Aaron Marsh (Jr., Summerland, BC) scored three goals in the losing effort, while Brad Bjorgum (So., Apple Valley, Minn./Eastview HS) had a pair of goals for the Auggies.

Concordia (3-3-1 MIAC, 5-8-1 overall) went ahead early in the game when Toby Schneider (Sr., Grand Forks, N.D.) scored his ninth goal of the year at 4:13 of the opening period. Augsburg (2-3-0 MIAC, 6-6-2 overall) countered with two goals three minutes apart in the middle of the period. Bjorgum scored his first goal of the game at 8:03, followed by an even-strength goal from Joe Johnson (Sr., Ramsey, Minn./Anoka HS).

That set the table for Augsburg to grab control of the game in the second period. The Auggies added to their lead 1:03 into the second when Chad Moore (Jr., Lakeville, Minn.) scored his first goal of the year. The Auggies put the game out of reach with a pair of goals 18 seconds apart. Jaro Cesky (Jr., Prague, Czech Republic) scored his team-leading 12th goal of the year at 13:54, and then Jake Wegscheider (Jr., Little Canada, Minn./Roseville HS) found the back of the net at 14:12 to push the Augsburg lead to 5-1.

Concordia scored four times in the third period but they could only get as close as 6-4. Jeff Styba (Jr., Shoreview, Minn.) scored the Cobbers' third goal of the period, and second in 24 seconds, at 9:02. The goal closed the gap to two, before Bjorgum stopped the Cobber momentum with his second goal of the game at
14:58. Marsh completed his hat trick at 19:26 when he scored his power-play goal.

Concordia held an overwhelming edge in shots on goal. The Cobbers out shot Augsburg 41-21, but couldn't crack goaltender Peter Samargia (Jr., Gilbert, Minn./Eveleth-Gilbert HS) in the critical second period. Concordia goaltender Jason Gregoire (Jr., Moorhead, Minn.) finished the game with 14 saves and Samargia turned back 36 shots.

The two teams complete the series tomorrow afternoon at 2:00 at the Moorhead Sports Center.
