Men's Hockey 1/12/02 -- Concordia-Moorhead 2, Augsburg 0
BOXSCORE
MOORHEAD, Minn. (1/12/02) -- Concordia College-Moorhead used two power play goals and timely goaltending from Jason Gregoire (Jr., Moorhead, Minn.) to shut out visiting Augsburg College 2-0 Saturday afternoon and gain a split in the two-game Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference series at the Moorhead Sports Center.
Gregoire turned aside all 31 shots that he faced to pick up his first shutout in a Cobber uniform.
The Cobbers (4-3-1 MIAC, 6-8-1 overall) received man-advantage goals from Treavor Peterson (Jr., Thief River Falls, Minn.) and Nate Ronning (Fr., Moorhead, Minn.) to break out of their four-game losing streak. Augsburg (2-4-0 MIAC, 6-7-2 overall) netminder
Peter Samargia (Jr., Gilbert, Minn./Eveleth-Gilbert HS) stopped 27 of the 29 shots he faced, as the Auggies out shot Concordia 31-29 in the three periods.
Concordia used a renewed commitment to defense in order to shut down the Augsburg attack. The Cobbers limited Augsburg's odd-man rushes and power play attempts to get back on the winning track. Augsburg went 0-for-6 on the power play and rarely had clean opportunities at the Cobber goal.
The Cobbers first goal was at 9:07 at the first period. Peterson scored his second goal of the year after Augsburg's
Patrick Hook (So., Monticello, Minn.) was whistled for interference. Toby Schneider (Sr., Grand Forks, N.D.) and Matt Noterman (Fr., Rochester, Minn.) assisted on the goal. It was the first time in three games that the Cobbers had held a lead. Ronning added to the lead when he scored on a man advantage at 6:05 of the second period. The Cobber defense and Gregoire made the two-goal cushion stand up, as neither team could score in the final frame. It was Concordia's first shutout since January 20, 2001, when they shutout Augsburg in Minneapolis.
Both teams return to action with Friday-Saturday (1/18-19) MIAC series. Concordia has another key MIAC matchup next weekend, travelling to St. John's for a two-game series, with both games played at the National Sports Center in St. Cloud, Minn. Augsburg will have a home-and-home series against Hamline, Friday's game at the State Fair Coliseum in St. Paul, Minn. at 7 p.m., Saturday's game at the Augsburg Ice Arena at 7 p.m.
