St. Olaf topples Augsburg in Northfield, 62-48.

NORTHFIELD, Minn. (1/12/02) -- Liz Woodrow (Sr., Aitkin, Minn.) scored 15 points to lead a balanced scoring attack, as St. Olaf College claimed a 62-48 victory over Augsburg College in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference women's basketball game Saturday afternoon at St. Olaf's Skoglund Athletic Center.

Ten Oles scored as the hosts improved to 6-6 overall and 4-5 in MIAC play, while Augsburg dropped its second game in a row to fall to 4-8 overall and 3-6 in the MIAC.

The Oles opened the game with an 8-2 run in the first three-plus minutes, and after the Auggies cut the lead to 16-14 with 7:43 left, the Oles closed the half with a 12-2 run, giving the hosts a 28-16 halftime advantage. St. Olaf never trailed in the game.

Jill Johnson (So., Butterfield, Minn./St. James HS) and Liz Mundahl (Jr., Eagan, Minn.) had nine points apiece for the Oles, with Johnson adding a team-high five rebounds. Sara Erickson (Jr., Cambridge, Minn.) had eight points.

Augsburg forced St. Olaf to the line often, committing 31 fouls to St. Olaf's 19. Three Auggies fouled out of the game. The Oles connected on 24-of-39 free throws (61.5 percent), while Augsburg's shooting woes continued, connecting on just 8-of-18 free-throw attempts (44.4 percent).

St. Olaf also took advantage of 27 Augsburg turnovers, while the hosts committed just 12, forcing 11 steals. Johnson had three steals.

Megan Wetzell (So., Wells, Minn./United South Central HS) led the Auggies off the bench for the second game in a row, scoring eight points and adding a game-high eight rebounds. Shannon Spears (Jr., Champlin, Minn./Champlin Park HS) and Amanda Haugen (Kenyon, Minn./Kenyon-Wanamingo HS) also had eight points. Carrie Schwartz * (Sr., Hutchinson, Minn.) and Julie Andert (So., Eden Prairie, Minn.) had six points apiece. Andert had six rebounds.

Both teams return to MIAC action on Monday (1/14) at 7:30 p.m., Augsburg hosting Bethel and St. Olaf playing at St. Catherine.
