Carrie Velenchenko (Fr., Maple Grove, Minn.) scored the first two goals of her career, and
Katie Cheese (Sr., Shakopee, Minn.) had a goal and an assist, as Augsburg College claimed a 6-3 win over host Bethel College in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference women's hockey game Saturday afternoon at the Columbia Ice Arena.
Augsburg claimed a split of the weekend series with Bethel. Augsburg improves to 3-9-2 overall and 2-5-1 in MIAC play, while Bethel is now 2-9-2 overall and 1-7-1 in MIAC play.
The Auggies rallied from a 2-1 second-period deficit with five straight goals to take a commanding lead, outshooting the Royals by a 32-30 count.
Alyson Sundberg (Jr., St. Paul, Minn./Roseville HS) scored two goals for the Royals, while Emily Lousman (Sr., Eden Prairie, Minn.) and and Marissa Cwik (Fr., Chicago, Ill./Fenwick HS) had two assists each.
Augsburg opened the scoring on a goal from
Jenny Martin (Fr., Plymouth, Minn./Wayzata HS). Velenchenko's goal tied the game midway through the second period, and defenders Cheese and
Laura Hoffman (So., Bloomington, Minn./Kennedy HS) followed with goals in a 2:22 span late in the period.
Annie Mattison (Sr., Anchorage, Alaska/East HS) put the puck in the net for the Auggies 47 seconds into the third period, followed by Velenchenko's second goal of the game, 1:46 later.
Lauren Chezick (Fr., Hastings, Minn.) had three assists for the Auggies, while
Laura McGowan (Sr., Fridley, Minn./Spring Lake Park HS) had two assists.
Katie Fedoryk (So., Austin, Minn.) made 27 saves in the game to pick up the win for the Auggies, while Kim Myers (Sr., Coon Rapids, Minn.) made 20 saves in a losing effort, with Patti Schaller (Fr., Sebring, Fla.) making six saves in relief in the third period.
Augsburg returns to MIAC action with a two-game series against St. Olaf. Thursday's (1/17) game is at 7:05 p.m. at the Augsburg Ice Arena, with Saturday's (1/19) game at 7 p.m. in Northfield, Minn. Bethel has a two-game MIAC series against Gustavus. Friday's (1/18) game is at 7 p.m. at Gustavus, with Saturday's game at 4:30 p.m. at the Columbia Ice Arena.
