ST. PETER, Minn. (1/16/02) -- Angie Peterson (So., Northfield, Minn.) scored nine of her team-leading 14 points in the second half, one of five Gustavus Adolphus College players to score in double figures, as the Gusties claimed a 74-68 win over visiting Augsburg College in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference women's basketball game Wednesday night at Gustavus' Lund Center.
Gustavus outscored Augsburg 8-2 in the final 1:26 to improve to 10-4 overall and 9-2 in MIAC play. Augsburg drops to 5-10 overall and 4-8 in MIAC play.
The game was tied 20 times and the lead changed 20 times in the back-and-forth game, with eight ties and six lead changes in the second half.
Augsburg used an 8-0 run over a 1:14 span midway through the second half to take its biggest lead of the game, 56-48, with 11:01 left in the game. However, the Gusties slowly rallied back to take a 66-64 lead with 2:18 left. With the game tied again at 66-66 with 1:48 remaining, the Gusties went on a 6-0 run, on jumpers from Marnie Stenson (Jr., Prior Lake, Minn./Shakopee HS), Peterson and two free throws from Kristin Kachelmyer (Fr., Mankato, Minn./Mankato East HS). Kachelmyer hit two more free throws in the closing seconds to give the Gusties their largest lead of the game with the final margin. Augsburg missed scoring chances on three of its last four possessions.
Kachelmyer scored 10 points, hitting 6-of-6 free throws, while Stenson had 10 points with four assists. Jennifer Klohs (So., Brooklyn Park, Minn./Champlin Park HS) scored 13 points with four rebounds and three steals, and Kelly Etzel (Jr., Hamel, Minn./Wayzata HS) had 10 points and five rebounds. Carey Willis (Sr., Plymouth, Minn./Wayzata HS) had five points, six rebounds, seven assists and two steals.
Augsburg was paced by
Kelly Chapman (So., Willernie, Minn./Mahtomedi HS), who scored 19 points and had had seven rebounds, both game highs. Chapman scored in double figures for the 10th time in Augsburg's 15 games this season, and the 20th time in her 38-game Auggie career.
Allison Illa * (Sr., Cannon Falls, Minn.) had 16 points and six rebounds for the Auggies, and
Julie Andert (So., Eden Prairie, Minn.) scored nine points with five rebounds, two blocked shots, five assists and three steals.
Shannon Spears (Jr., Champlin, Minn./Champlin Park HS) had eight points and five assists.
Both teams return to MIAC action on Saturday (1/19) at 1 p.m. in Northfield, Minn., Augsburg playing at Carleton and Gustavus playing at St. Olaf.
