BOXSCORE
MINNEAPOLIS (1/17/02) --
Lauren Chezick (Fr., Hastings, Minn.) had a goal and two assists, and
Laura McGowan (Sr., Fridley, Minn./Spring Lake Park HS) scored the go-ahead goal on an unassisted breakaway late in the second period, as Augsburg College rallied to score a 5-4 win over St. Olaf College in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference women's hockey game Thursday night at the Augsburg Ice Arena.
Augsburg won its second game in a row to improve to 4-9-2 overall and 3-5-1 in MIAC play, while St. Olaf dropped its ninth game in its last 10 starts to fall to 4-12 ovearll and 1-8 in MIAC play.
The Auggies rallied from deficits of 2-1 and 3-2 with three straight goals to forge a 5-3 lead, withstanding a late charge by the Oles.
After
Melynda Kleewein (Fr., Anchorage, Alaska/Dimond HS) tied the game at 3-3 midway through the second period on a two-on-one break from Chezick, Augsburg went ahead to stay on McGowan's breakaway goal, which came as a delayed penalty, 6-on-5 situation.
Carrie Velenchenko (Fr., Maple Grove, Minn.) scored what would be the eventual game-winning goal on Chezick's second assist in the third period.
Sarah Ray (Jr., St. Paul, Minn./Cretin-Derham Hall HS) scored twice and had an assist for the Oles, who broke a three-game scoreless streak with their four-goal output. Kate Barnett (Fr., Burnsville, Minn.) had a goal and two assists, and Erin Baxter (Fr., Rosemount, Minn.) had a goal and an assist.
Baxter scored first at the 3:09 mark for St. Olaf, but Augsburg tied it five minutes later on a goal from
Hannah Dietrich (Fr., Luverne, Minn.). Ray's two goals for St. Olaf sandwiched Chezick's scoring tally.
Katie Fedoryk (So., Austin, Minn.) made 30 saves in the game to pick up the win for the Auggies, while Kerry Rollwagen (Fr., Mendota Heights, Minn./South St. Paul HS) made 36 saves in a losing effort. Augsburg outshot St. Olaf by a 41-34 margin.
The teams complete the two-game MIAC series on Saturday (1/19) at 7 p.m. at the Northfield, Minn., Ice Arena.
