Cesky, Holzinger lead Auggies over Hamline 5-4!

MINNEAPOLIS (1/19/02) -- Jaro Cesky (Jr., Prague, Czech Republic) scored two goals, including the game-winning goal at the 5:37 mark of the third period, to lead Augsburg College to a 5-4 win over Hamline University in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference men's hockey game Saturday night at the Augsburg Ice Arena.

Cesky's second goal of the game, a power-play tally on assists from Joe Johnson (Sr., Ramsey, Minn./Anoka HS) and David May (Fr., Burnsville, Minn.), capped an Augsburg comeback from a 4-3 second-period deficit. Augsburg improved to 7-7-3 overall and 3-4-1 in MIAC play with the win, while Hamline dropped to 6-12-1 overall and 3-6-1 in the MIAC.

Augsbrg took a 3-2 lead after the first period, but the Pipers used two second-period goals to take the advantage into the final period. But Brad Holzinger (Jr., North Oaks, Minn./Hill-Murray HS) scored his second goal of the game at the 2:46 mark of the third period, and Cesky followed with his game-winner three minutes later.

Both Cesky and Holzinger added assists for three-point nights. Johnson had a goal and two assists for a three-point night for the Auggies.

Hamline opened the game with two goals in a two-minute span early in the first period, on an unassisted goal from Mike Johnson (So., Grand Forks, N.D.) and a goal from B.J. Anderson (Sr., Alexandria, Minn.). Anderson ended up with a three-point night, with a goal and two assists, while Troy Kleven (Jr., Crookston, Minn.) had two assists.

But Augsburg scored three goals in a six-minute span, starting with a goal from Johnson at the 7:54 mark, Cesky's first tally at the 11:13 mark and Holzinger's first goal, a shorthanded breakaway at the 14:35 mark.

Lubos Taragel (Fr., Bratislava, Slovakia) scored two goals in a 3:31 span early in the second period to give the Pipers their second-period advantage.

Augsburg outshot Hamline by a 32-24 margin. Steffan Braunlich (Fr., Playa del Rey, Calif.), who was pressed into service when Augsburg's regular goalie, Peter Samargia (Jr., Gilbert, Minn./Eveleth-Gilbert HS), was sidelined after Friday night's game with back spasms, made 20 saves to notch the win.

Robert Fuchs (Jr., Richmond, B.C.) made 27 saves in a losing effort for the Pipers.

Both teams return to MIAC action next weekend. Augsburg faces St. Mary's in a two-game series, with Friday night's (1/25) game at 7:05 p.m. in Winona, Minn., and Saturday's night's (1/26) game at 7 p.m. at the Augsburg Ice Arena. Hamline faces St. John's, with Friday's game at 7 p.m. at the State Fair Coliseum in St. Paul, Minn., and Saturday's game at 2 p.m. at the National Hockey Center in St. Cloud, Minn.
