Velenchenko scores twice, Augsburg sweeps St. Olaf with 4-3 win!

NORTHFIELD, Minn. (1/19/02) -- Carrie Velenchenko (Fr., Maple Grove, Minn.) scored two goals, including the eventual game-winner at the 11:41 mark of the third period, as Augsburg College rallied to score a 4-3 win over St. Olaf College in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference women's hockey game Saturday night at the Northfield Ice Arena.

In sweeping the weekend series, Augsburg won its third game in a row to improve to 5-9-2 overall and 4-5-1 in MIAC play, while St. Olaf dropped its 10th game in its last 11 starts to fall to 4-13 ovearll and 1-9 in MIAC play.

Velenchenko has scored all five of her goals this season in the last three games, and claimed her second multi-goal game of the season. She also had the eventual game-winning goal in Thursday's 5-4 home win over the Oles.

Hannah Dietrich (Fr., Luverne, Minn.) assisted on both of Velenchenko's goals for a two-point night. Lauren Chezick (Fr., Hastings, Minn.) also had a two-point night, with a goal and an assist.

Erin Baxter (Fr., Rosemount, Minn.) opened the scoring for the Oles with a goal at the 6:49 mark of the first period, but Augsburg tied the game 26 seconds later, when Chezick scored on a feed from April Leger (Sr., Austin, Minn.).

St. Olaf took another lead early in the second period, when Lorna Wilson (Fr., Wasilla, Ark.) scored her first collegiate goal. But the Auggies took the lead on two goals in a two-minute stretch, by Velenchenko and Kristi Brusletto (Sr., Basalt, Colo.).

St. Olaf tied the game at 3-3 on a power-play goal from Kate Barnett (Fr., Burnsville, Minn.) midway through the second period.

Augsburg outshot St. Olaf by a 51-22 margin. Andrea Smith (Fr., Burnsville, Minn.) made 47 saves for the Oles, while Katie Fedoryk (So., Austin, Minn.) made 19 saves for the Auggies.

Both teams have Friday-Saturday (1/25-26) MIAC series next weekend. Augsburg hosts Concordia-Moorhead in a two-game series at the Augsburg Ice Arena. Friday's game is at 7:05 p.m., and Saturday's game is at 2:05 p.m. St. Olaf faces St. Benedict in a home-and-home series, with Friday's game at St. Benedict at 7:35 p.m. and Saturday's game at St. Olaf at 7 p.m.
