BOXSCORE

MINNEAPOLIS (1/26/02) -- Ryan Hollingsworth (Sr., Brooklyn Park, Minn./Robbinsdale Cooper HS) and Chad Moore (Jr., Lakeville, Minn.) had a goal and assist each, and Peter Samargia (Jr., Gilbert, Minn./Eveleth-Gilbert HS) came up with 32 saves, leading Augsburg College to a series sweep of St. Mary's University with a 4-1 win in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference men's hockey game Saturday night at the Augsburg Ice Arena.

With the series sweep and its third victory in a row, Augsburg improved to 9-7-3 overall and 5-4-1 in MIAC play. Augsburg has won four of its last six games to move into contention for the five-team MIAC postseason playoffs. St. Mary's, currently in second place in the MIAC, dropped to 11-6-2 overall and 6-3-1 in league play.

Augsburg has won its last six games in a row over the Cardinals and is unbeaten in its last 11 starts against the Cardinals, dating back to the 1996-97 season. Augsburg head coach Mike Schwartz, in his sixth season, is 10-1-1 against St. Mary's.

Augsburg rallied from a 1-0 first-period deficit with four goals in the final two periods to dominate the game, despite the fact that St. Mary's outshot the Auggies by a 33-26 margin.

Brad Schwartzbauer (Jr., White Bear Lake, Minn.) tied the game for the Auggies midway through the second period with a 4-on-4 goal, and Nick Murray (Sr., Bloomington, Minn./Holy Angels HS) put the Auggies in front to stay with a goal with 55 seconds left in the second frame, on assists from Moore and Hollingsworth.

Hollingsworth, in his first full season on the Auggie varsity, notched his first collegiate goal with a steal and score 1:35 into the third period, and Moore followed at the 7:04 mark with his second goal of the season, on a solid passing play from Jaro Cesky (Jr., Prague, Czech Republic) and Jake Wegscheider (Jr., Little Canada, Minn./Roseville HS).

Nick Meeker (Jr., Rochester, Minn./Lourdes HS) had the lone Cardinal goal, a power-play tally at the 12:24 mark on assists from Lenny Hofmann (So., Sartell, Minn.) and Al Schumacher (So., Oakdale, Minn.).

Samargia completed a strong weekend series after returning to the Auggie lineup from missing last Saturday night's win over Hamline with back spasms. He ended up with 69 saves on the weekend, allowing just three goals. Eric Richardson (Sr., Skokie, Ill./Lake Forest Academy) took the loss for the Cardinals, making 22 saves.

Both teams return to MIAC action with series next Friday (2/1) and Saturday (2/2). Augsburg hosts St. Olaf on Friday at 7 p.m. at the Augsburg Ice Arena and plays at St. Olaf on Saturday at 7 p.m.; St. Mary's hosts St. John's on Friday at 7 p.m. and plays at St. John's on Saturday at 2 p.m.
