BOXSCORE
MINNEAPOLIS (1/26/02) -- Annie Knierim (Jr., Glasgow, Mont.) scored the game-winning goal at the 2:47 mark of overtime on Saturday, lifting Concordia College-Moorhead to a 4-3, come-from-behind win over host Augsburg College in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference women's hockey game at the Augsburg Ice Arena.
Concordia improved to 12-2-1 overall and 11-2-1 in MIAC play. In sweeping the weekend series with the Auggies, the Cobbers have won their last five games in a row. Augsburg dropped to 5-11-2 overall and 4-6-1 in MIAC play.
Concordia rallied from a 3-1 second-period deficit with the final three goals of the game, with all but one goal coming from the line of Knierim, Katie Jacques (Jr., Tempe, Ariz.) and Lindsay Kurtis (So., Phoenix, Ariz.). Jacques had two goals, including the game-tying goal midway through the third period.
Jacques also had a penalty-shot attempt midway through the second period, after Auggie goalie
Katie Fedoryk (So., Austin, Minn.) was forced from the game after being hurt on a breakaway attempt. Relief goalie
Laura Hind (Fr., Lafayette, Colo./Quest Academy HS) made the save.
However, the Cobbers eventually got the best of Hind, putting two goals past the reliever.
Augsburg jumped in front first, when
Carrie Velenchenko (Fr., Maple Grove, Minn.), last week's MIAC Player of the Week, scored two minutes into the game. However, Concordia quickly tied it up, when Jacques scored a breakaway, unassisted goal just 24 seconds after Velenchenko's tally.
But Augsburg followed with a goal 1:13 later, when
Corrie Krzyska (Fr., Fridley, Minn.) found the net for her second goal of the season. Augsburg took a 3-1 lead early in the second period, when
Dottie Gilkerson (So., Somerset, Wis.) scored.
Concordia started its comeback midway through the second period, when Sandra Ryden (Sr., Jonstorp, Sweden) scored a shorthanded, unassisted goal.
Shyla Wilson (Jr., Cohasset, Minn.) made 26 saves in goal for the Cobbers, who were outshot for the second game in a row by the Auggies, this game by a 29-25 margin.
Augsburg returns to MIAC action with a two-game series against Hamline. Thursday's (1/31) game is at the State Fair Coliseum in St. Paul at 6:30 p.m., and Saturday's (2/2) game is at 2:05 p.m. at the Augsburg Ice Arena. Concordia returns to action with a two-game series against St. Mary's on Friday (2/1) at 7 p.m. and Saturday at 2 p.m., both games at the Moorhead Civic Center.
