Augsburg drops fifth in a row, falls at St. John's, 76-49.

COLLEGEVILLE, Minn. (1/9/02) -- Luke Witt (Sr., Red Wing, Minn.) scored five of his game-high 15 points in a 11-2 game-opening run, leading host St. John's University to a 76-49 rout of Augsburg College in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference men's basketball game Wednesday night at Sexton Arena.

Sixteen Johnnies saw playing time and 12 scored, as the Johnnies improved to 5-7 overall and 3-4 in MIAC play. Augsburg dropped to 6-6 overall and 2-5 in MIAC play. The Auggies have lost five straight games and six of their last seven games since starting the season 5-0.

The 11-2 game-opening run, over the first 6:12 of the game, enabled the host Johnnies to take a lead they would never relinquish. The Johnnies led by as many as 19 points in the first half and held a 37-21 advantage at halftime. The Johnnies built the lead to as many as 27 points on three occasions in the second half, including the final margin of victory.

St. John's outrebounded Augsburg by a 41-26 margin and forced 15 Auggie turnovers. St. John's converted 19 points off turnovers to Augsburg's eight.

Witt had 15 points and a game-high six rebounds, while Dusty Lamker (Sr., Golden Valley, Minn./Robbinsdale Armstrong HS) had 11 points and five rebounds. Shaun McGuire (Jr., Monticello, Minn.) scored 10 points and had six rebounds, and Nick Lamusga (Sr., Shoreview, Minn./Mounds View HS) had nine points. Kevin Buth (Jr., Edina, Minn.) had four assists and Pat McKenzie (So., Green Bay, Wis./Notre Dame HS) had three steals.

No Auggies scored in double figures. Jay Howard (So., Burnsville, Minn.) led Augsburg with seven points, while Adam Kotewa (Jr., Mankato, Minn./Mankato West HS), Trevor Overskei (Jr., Roseville, Minn.), Nathan Hennessy (So., Savage, Minn.) and Shawn Johnson (Fr., Faribault, Minn.) scoring six points each. Hennessy led the Auggies with five rebounds.

Both teams return to MIAC play on Saturday (1/12) at 3 p.m., Augsburg hosting St. Olaf at Si Melby Hall, and St. John's playing at Hamline.
