Women's Soccer 10/1/02 -- Concordia-Moorhead 1, Augsburg 0
BOXSCORE
MOORHEAD, Minn. (10/1/02) -- Concordia College-Moorhead used a stifling defense to keep the Augsburg College attack away from the goal and snapped a five-game winless streak, downing the Auggies 1-0 and snapping Augsburg's three-game winning streak in the process, in the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference game at Jake Christiansen Stadium.
Carmelle Johnson's (So., Northridge, Calif.) goal at 42:15 was all the offense Concordia (1-2-0 MIAC, 2-5-1 overall) would need in putting up their second win of the year and first in the MIAC. Johnson scored on a shot off of a corner kick. Meghan Hansen (Sr., Eagan, Minn.) delivered the ball into the goal mouth where Johnson was able to get a foot to the ball and shoot it over Augsburg goalie
Laura Hoffman * (Jr., Bloomington, Minn./Kennedy HS). For Johnson it was her first collegiate goal.
It was only the third goal conceded by Augsburg (2-3-0, 5-3-0) and Hoffman in the Auggies' first eight games of the year. All three Augsburg losses have been 1-0 setbacks.
Despite being out shot 16-6 in the game, the Cobbers were able to control a majority of the possession. Most of Augsburg's shots on the net came from counterattacks and long balls served into the Concordia defensive third of the field. Concordia goalkeeper Kathy Braun (Sr., Willmar, Minn.) turned aside all nine shots that she faced, and did a good job of cutting off many of the Auggies' passes that made their way through the back of the Cobber defense. Hoffman made two saves on the day.
Concordia will play at St. Mary's on Saturday (10/5) at 12 noon, while Augsburg will play at Catherine on Saturday at 1 p.m.
