ST. PETER, Minn. (10/2/02) -- Nicole Nesseth had 12 kills, six service aces and four blocks, leading Gustavus Adolphus College past Augsburg College in a three-game sweep in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference volleyball match Wednesday night at Gustavus' Gus Young Court.
Game scores were 30-27, 30-12 and 30-18 in favor of the Gusties, now 8-9 overall and 2-3 in MIAC play. Augsburg drops to 2-13 overall and 1-4 in the MIAC.
Gustavus took advantage of a .000 hitting game by Augsburg, as the Auggies had just 23 kills and 23 attack errors. In addition, the Gusties converted 17 service aces and had seven team blocks in the match.
After a close first game, Gustavus dominated the second and third games to take the match. The Gusties jumped out to an 11-2 lead in the second game, as Augsburg had just five kills and eight attack errors in the game. The third game was the same, as Gustavus opened with a 14-7 lead and the Auggies could not cut the lead closer than four points, with just eight kills and seven attack errors.
Tara Houlihan had seven kills and 12 digs for the Gusties, while Jessica Schaetzke had six kills. Anne Osthus had five kills, five aces and three blocks. Pat Lawton had four aces. Rachel Batalden had 22 assists and five digs, and Steph Siekman had eight digs.
Augsburg was led by
Denise Foster (Sr., Little Canada, Minn./Roseville HS), who had six kills and six digs.
Billie Painschab (Fr., Howard Lake, Minn./Howard Lake-Waverly-Winsted HS) had five kills and two blocks, as did
Kelly Larvick (Sr., Good Thunder, Minn./Lake Crystal-Wellcome Memorial HS).
Anna Piermantier (Jr., Afton, Minn./Stillwater HS) had 17 assists and six digs.
Augsburg returns to action next Wednesday (10/9) at 7:30 p.m., hosting St. Benedict at Si Melby Hall. Gustavus hosts Northwestern-Roseville on Thursday (10/3) at 7 p.m.
