Women's Soccer 10/23/02 -- Augsburg 11, Wisconsin-Superior 0

BOXSCORE

MINNEAPOLIS (10/23/02) -- Tia Chronis (Fr., Braham, Minn.) scored her first collegiate hat trick, with three goals and an assist for a seven-point night, leading Augsburg College to an 11-0 rout of the University of Wisconsin-Superior in a nonconference women's soccer game Wednesday night at Augsburg's Edor Nelson Field.

Millie Suk (Fr., Rochester, Minn./Mayo HS) had two goals for the Auggies, who improved to 11-3-1 overall. Augsburg claimed its fifth victory in a row and extended its unbeaten streak to seven. Augsburg has won nine of its last 11 games. Eight different Auggies scored goals against UW-Superior, and 11 players figured in the scoring.

Because of injuries and illnesses, UW-Superior was only able to dress and play nine players, two below the 11 that normally are on the field. As a result, Augsburg outshot the Yellojackets by a 59-0 margin in the contest, getting 31 shots in the first half and 28 in the second, as the ball rarely crossed the center line into the UW-Superior offensive end.

All 11 Auggie wins have come by shutout this season. Augsburg currently has a streak of 453 minutes without allowing a goal, dating back six games. Meanwhile, UW-Superior, dropping its ninth straight shutout loss, saw its scoring drought extended to 864 straight minutes.

With the win, Augsburg tied the 1996 squad (11-5-1) for the second-most wins in a single season in the 18-year varsity history of the Auggie women's soccer program. With four games remaining, Augsburg still has a shot at securing the best record in school history. The school's best record was 13-4 in 1995. With three Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference contests remaining, Augsburg needs just one win to tie its best conference finish ever (previous highs were 6-4 in 1995 and 6-3-1 in 1996).

Carrie Velenchenko (So., Maple Grove, Minn.) scored on a crossing pass from Chronis for Augsburg's first goal, just three minutes into the game. Ten minutes later, Chronis scored her first goal, on a feed from Kristi Ofstad * (Jr., Rapid City, S.D./Stevens HS). Kristen Lideen * (Jr., Champlin, Minn./Champlin Park HS) scored her first goal of the season on a rebound in the 15th minute, and Chronis added her second goal from Ofstad at the 26:47 mark.

Suk scored twice before halftime on breakaways, the first on a feed from Maggie Dornfeld (Fr., Woodbury, Minn.) and the second on feeds from Jazz Burch (Jr., Minnetonka, Minn./St. Louis Park HS) and Kim Glumich (Sr., Moorhead, Minn.).

Suk, just the fifth Auggie in school history to score 10 goals or more in a season, is now in third place on the school's single-season scoring record list; the school scoring record is 14, set by Kristin Totushek in 1997.

Chronis completed her hat trick on an unassisted tally three minutes into the second half, and Nora Austin (Fr., St. Paul, Minn./Cretin-Derham Hall HS) collected her first collegiate goal on an unassisted tally at the 54-minute mark. Eilidh Reyelts (Fr., Duluth, Minn./Duluth Marshall HS) scored on a three-touch pass from Lideen and Heidi Hilleren (Jr., Duluth, Minn./East HS) in the 74th minute. Augsburg scored twice in the last 10 minutes, on a penalty kick by Burch and on an unassisted steal and score by Hilleren.

Theresa Williams (Sr., Duluth, Minn./Central HS) made 22 saves for UW-Superior. None of Augsburg's three goalkeepers -- Laura Hoffman * (Jr., Bloomington, Minn./Kennedy HS), Sarah Sletten (Jr., Churchs Ferry, N.D./Devils Lake HS) and Kristen Opalinski (Sr., Latrobe, Pa.) -- had to make a save in the contest.

Augsburg returns to action on Saturday (10/26), hosting Gustavus Adolphus College at Edor Nelson Field in the second game of an MIAC doubleheader. The men's teams will play at 1 p.m., followed by the women's game at 3:30 p.m. UW-Superior plays at UW-La Crosse on Saturday at 2:30 p.m.
