RIVER FALLS, Wis. (11/1/02) -- Lindsay Carlson scored two goals and nine different players figured in the hosts scoring, as the University of Wisconsin-River Falls opened its women's hockey season with a 5-3 win over Augsburg College in a nonconference contest Friday night at Hunt Ice Arena.
It was the first game of the season for both teams.
Tied 1-1 midway through the first period, River Falls went on a three-goal scoring burst to take a commanding lead, Augsburg cut the lead to one goal with two tallies in a 16-second span midway through the second period, but the Falcons clinched the game winner with a goal in the third.
Carlson opened the scoring for River Falls with an unassisted tally 2:10 into the game, but the Auggies tied it up on a power-play goal from
Annie Annunziato (Jr., Commack, N.Y.) midway through the period. River Falls scored twice in a three-minute stretch, with goals from Ali Slinden and Carlson, on the power-play.
Early in the second period, Heather Egeness gave the Falcons a 4-1 lead with a scoring tally, but the Auggies cut the lead to one goal quickly.
Anna Roesler (Fr., Duluth, Minn./Duluth East HS) scored at the 10:33 mark, followed by a goal from
Melynda Kleewein (So., Anchorage, Alaska/Dimond HS) at the 10:49 mark.
Lisa McGuire capped the scoring for River Falls with a goal at the 7:06 mark of the third period.
Lauren Chezick (So., Hastings, Minn.) assisted on all three Auggie goals, with Annunziato and
Genevieve Allegrezza (Jr., Anchorage, Alaska/Service HS) adding assists.
River Falls outshot Augsburg by a 40-22 margin.
Katie Fedoryk (Jr., Austin, Minn.) made 35 saves for Augsburg, while Marlene Yaeger made 19 saves for River Falls.
Augsburg returns to action next Friday (11/8) with its home opener, a 4 p.m. contest with Lake Forest (Ill.) at Augsburg Ice Arena. It's part of a hockey doubleheader at Augsburg on Friday, with the Auggie men following with a 7 p.m. game against Gustavus. Augsburg's women will also host Lake Forest next Saturday (11/9) at 2:05 p.m. at the Augsburg Ice Arena.
River Falls hosts Gustavus on Saturday (11/2) at 7:05 p.m. at Hunt Ice Arena.
