MINNEAPOLIS (11/1/02) -- Outshooting host Augsburg College by a 53-17 margin, St. John's University cruised to a 5-0 win over Augsburg in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference men's hockey game Friday night at the Augsburg Ice Arena.
Darryl Smoleroff (Fr., Maple Grove, Minn.) and Ryan Langenbrunner (Fr., Cloquet, Minn.) had a goal and assist apiece in their college debuts, and Adam Holmgren (So., Blaine, Minn.) contributed three assists for the Johnnies.
It was the first game of the season for both teams.
Smoleroff and Scott Bjorklund (Fr., Moorhead, Minn.) had goals in the first period, and Joel Starke (Jr., Mankato, Minn./West HS), Langenbrunner and Shane Taylor (Sr., Plymouth, Minn./Wayzata HS) had goals in the second period.
St. John's claimed three power-play goals in nine attempts, while Augsburg was shut out in its eight power plays. The teams combined for 37 penalties for 85 minutes -- 18-of-36 for St. John's and 19-for-49 for Augsburg.
Rick Gregory (Sr., Flin Flon, Manitoba) stopped all 17 shots he faced to pick up the shutout in goal for the Johnnies.
Pete Samargia (Sr., Gilbert, Minn./Eveleth-Gilbert HS) made 48 saves for the Auggies.
The series concludes on Saturday (11/2) at 2 p.m. at the National Hockey Center in St. Cloud, Minn.
