MINNEAPOLIS (11/15/02) -- With five freshmen playing key roles, the University of St. Thomas opened its 2002-03 Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference season with a 4-1 women's hockey victory over visiting Augsburg College Friday night at Parade Ice Garden.

The teams close the weekend series Saturday with a game at the Augsgurg Ice Arena in Minneapolis at 2:05 p.m.

The game was tied 1-1 late into the second period before St. Thomas (2-0 overall, 1-0 MIAC) scored three goals in the final 22 minutes.

Augsburg (0-4 overall, 0-1 MIAC) took a 1-0 lead on a short-handed goal at 8:49 of the first period by junior Annie Annunziato (Jr., Commack, N.Y.), assisted by Lauren Chezick (So., Hastings, Minn.).

That was the only goal allowed by St. Thomas freshman goalie Becky Kilpatrick (Fr., Burnsville, Minn.), who made her collegiate debut and stopped 16 of 17 shots for the ninth-ranked Tommies.

Four other freshmen took care of the St. Thomas offense. Mel Drake (Fr., Shoreview, Minn./Mounds View HS) had two goals, including the go-ahead tally at 18:33 of the second period that broke a 1-1 tie and the game clincher at 19:49 of the frame. Tanaya Reitz (Fr., Moorhead, Minn.) had a tying goal at 8:28 of the second and added two assists. Jenny Sorensen (Fr., Plymouth, Minn./Wayzata HS) scored at 1:59 of the third period to build a 3-1 lead, and newcomer Maureen Hardwick (Fr., Warroad, Minn.) added two assists.

Junior Tomery Stolz (Jr., St. Louis Park, Minn.) had one assist for St. Thomas, which outshot Augsburg 42-17. Junior Katie Fedoryk (Jr., Austin, Minn.) stopped 38 of 42 shots for the Auggies, who have been in all four of their season defeats until the end.
