MINNEAPOLIS (11/16/02) --
Patrick Hook (Jr., Monticello, Minn.) scored the game-winning goal for the second straight game, giving Augsburg College a 3-1 win over Marian College (Wis.) in a nonconference men's hockey game Saturday night at the Augsburg Ice Arena.
Hook's goal at the 14:31 mark of the second period, on assists from
Dave Nelson (Fr., Woodbury, Minn./South St. Paul HS) and
Tarik Yumusaklar (Fr., Lakeville, Minn.), gave Augsburg a 2-1 lead. The Auggies held the lead through the third period, and
Joe Pontrelli (Jr., Eagan, Minn.) capped the scoring with an empty-net goal in the final minute.
Combined with Augsburg's 4-3 win over Marian on Friday, the Auggie claimed the sweep and their fourth win in a row in improving to 4-2 on the season. Marian falls to 3-5 overall.
Marian put the first goal on the board, when Andy Allen (So., Virginia, Minn.) scored his third goal of the series with 14 seconds left in the first period, on assists from Dan Odegard (Sr., Oakdale, Minn.) and Jon Daigle (So., Richmond, British Columbia).
Augsburg tied the game at the 6:58 mark of the second period, when
Brad Schwartzbauer (Sr., White Bear Lake, Minn.) scored on assists from
Brady Fougner (Fr., International Falls, Minn.) and
Jaro Cesky (Sr., Prague, Czech Republic). Fougner had two assists on the night, also assisting on the empty-net game-clincher.
For the first time this season, Augsburg outshot its opponent, claiming a 32-29 edge. Augsburg outshot Marian 20-8 in the second period. Goalie
Erik Young (So., White Bear Lake, Minn.), a transfer from the University of Minnesota making his second Auggie start, stopped 28 shots to complete the sweep. Terry Dunbar (Jr., Duluth, Minn.) made 29 saves in a losing effort for Marian.
The game was a penalty-filled affair, as the teams combined for 100 minutes of penalties, nearly half in the third period. Augsburg had 16 penalties for 56 minutes, while Marian had 14 penalties for 44 minutes. Augsburg was whistled for three 10-minute misconducts in the final two minutes, while Marian was whistled for two.
Augsburg returns to Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference action next weekend with a two-game series against Concordia-Moorhead. Friday's (11/22) game is at 7:35 p.m., and Saturday's (11/23) game is at 7 p.m. Marian returns to Midwest Collegiate Hockey Association action with a two-game series against the Milwaukee School of Engineering. Friday's game is at 7:25 p.m. in Milwaukee, Wis., and Saturday's game is at 7:30 p.m. in Fond du Lac, Wis.
