HAYWARD, Calif. (11/22/02) -- Augsburg College used a balanced scoring attack, with eight players playing 15 or more minutes, to claim a 65-56 triumph over Cornell College (Iowa) in the semifinal game of the California State-Hayward Tournament on Friday night.
The Auggies will advance to the tournament final on Saturday (11/23) at 8 p.m. to face either host Cal State-Hayward or Smith College (Mass.). It was the first game of the season for both teams.
Four Auggies scored in double figures, led by
Ashley Sasek (So., Waukesha, Wis./Kettle Moraine HS), who had 11 points, five steals and three assists.
Britni Morgan (Jr., Brooklyn Center, Minn./Robbinsdale Cooper HS) had 11 points, hitting three 3-pointers.
Katie Kelsey (So., Burnsville, Minn.) also hit three 3-pointers in compiling 11 points, to go with three steals and six rebounds.
Kelly Chapman * (Jr., Willernie, Minn./Mahtomedi HS) scored in double figures for the 27th time in her 49-game career, picking up 10 points with four assists and three steals.
Shannon Spears (Sr., Champlin, Minn./Champlin Park HS), Augsburg's only senior, hit two 3-pointers and scored nine points, with four rebounds and two steals. Megan Wetzel (Jr., Wells, Minn./United South Central HS) scored eight points and led the Auggies with nine rebounds.
Cornell was led by Erika Pepmeyer, who had a double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds. Katie Morris had 13 points and seven rebounds, and Cara Hegner had nine points and three steals. Lindsey Stoll had nine points, five rebounds and four assists, and Lindsey Pfalmer had six points and four assists.
