BOXSCORE

MINNEAPOLIS (11/22/02) -- Lauren Chezick (So., Hastings, Minn.) scored two goals and Kristin Johnson (So., Minnetonka, Minn./Wayzata HS) earned her first collegiate shutout in goal, leading Augsburg College to a 4-0 triumph over St. Mary's University in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference women's hockey game Friday evening at the Augsburg Ice Arena.

Augsburg, playing with a full lineup for the first time this season as players from fall sports made the transition to hockey, broke a school record-tying five-game losing streak in claiming its first win of the season. Augsburg is now 1-5 overall and 1-2 in MIAC play. Concordia broke a two-game winning streak in falling to 2-4-1 overall and 2-1 in MIAC play. Augsburg claimed a win over the Cardinals for the first time since the 1999-2000 season, breaking a four-game losing streak in the series.

Annie Annunziato (Jr., Commack, N.Y.) and Carrie Velenchenko (So., Maple Grove, Minn.) had a goal and assist each for the Auggies, with Melynda Kleewein (So., Anchorage, Alaska/Dimond HS) adding two assists.

Augsburg was outshot 36-25 in the contest, including being outshot 30-15 in the final two periods, but Johnson was solid in goal, stopping every shot she faced, including 13 on St. Mary's six power plays in the contest. The Cardinals were 0-for-6 on power plays, bring their season total to just 1-for-33 (3.0 percent).

Chezick opened the scoring at the 13:59 mark of the first period, scoring on feeds from Annunziato and Kleewein. Velenchenko followed with a goal at the 16:59 mark, stealing a pass and firing an unassisted shot past St. Mary's goalie Missie Meemken (Sr., St. Cloud, Minn./Apollo HS).

Chezick put her second marker on the board just 24 seconds into the second period, as she put in a shot on a rush from Kleewein. Annunziato capped the Auggie scoring with her team-high sixth goal of the season, on a feed from Velenchenko at the 6:49 mark.

Augsburg's first line of Velenchenko, Annunziato and Chezick have accounted for 11 of Augsburg's 16 goals and 26 of Augsburg's 37 points this season.

Samantha Hessel (Fr., Cedar, Minn./Centennial HS) relieved Meemken in goal in the third period for her first collegiate action, making eight saves.

The teams complete their MIAC series on Saturday (11/23) at 2 p.m. at the SMU Ice Arena in Winona, Minn.
