Women's Hockey 11/23/02 -- Augsburg 6, St. Mary's 1

BOXSCORE

WINONA, Minn. (11/23/02) -- Annie Annunziato (Jr., Commack, N.Y.) scored her first hat trick as a member of the Augsburg College women's hockey team, leading the Auggies to a 6-1 win over St. Mary's University in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference women's hockey game Saturday afternoon at the SMU Ice Arena.

In completing the sweep over the Cardinals -- Augsburg's first-ever season sweep over St. Mary's -- the Auggies improved to 2-5 overall and 2-2 in MIAC play. St. Mary's dropped to 2-5-1 overall and 2-2 in MIAC play. Augsburg shut out St. Mary's 4-0 on Friday.

Lauren Chezick (So., Hastings, Minn.) had a goal and an assist, and Carrie Velenchenko (So., Maple Grove, Minn.) and Melynda Kleewein (So., Anchorage, Alaska/Dimond HS) had two assists apiece for the Auggies, who outshot St. Mary's by a 39-31 margin.

Katie Fedoryk (Jr., Austin, Minn.) made 30 saves, including 15 in the third period, to pick up the win for Augsburg in goal.

St. Mary's continued its scoring slump in the loss to Augsburg. The Cardinals have scored just 10 goals in their first eight games, and have been outscored 20-2 in their five losses.

For the second straight day, SMU found itself in a 2-0 first-period hole, as Annunziato scored the first of her three goals on the power play at the 1:20 mark of the first period, then again on an unassisted, short-handed goal at the 12:37 mark, to give the Auggies a 2-0 advantage.

Emily Kearns (Jr., Hopkins, Minn.) finally ended SMU's scoring drought at the 5:39 mark of the second period, scoring an unassisted goal to pull the Cardinals within one, 2-1. Augsburg regained its two-goal lead before the period ended as Annunziato completed her hat trick with less than three minutes remaining in the period.

Both teams had their share of chances in the third period, but it was the Auggies who made the most of them, scoring on three of their 15 third-period shots. SMU, meanwhile, came up empty on all 15 of their shots in the period. Anna Roesler (Fr., Duluth, Minn./East HS) scored at the 8:59 mark, with Chezick adding a goal at the 17:45 mark. Genevieve Allegrezza (Jr., Anchorage, Alaska/Service HS) capped the scoring for the Auggies with a goal at the 18:57 mark.

St. Mary's goalie Missie Meemken (Sr., St. Cloud, Minn./Apollo HS) made 33 saves.

Augsburg returns to action with a non-conference game at Wisconsin-Stevens Point on Tuesday (11/26) at 7:30 p.m. in Stevens Point, Wis.
