Men's Hockey 11/26/02 -- Augsburg 5, Wisconsin-Superior 4
BOXCSCORE
SUPERIOR, Wis. (11/26/02) --
Jaro Cesky (Sr., Prague, Czech Republic) scored two goals and added an assist, tallying the eventual game-winning goal in the third period, leading Augsburg College to a 5-4 upset win over defending NCAA Division III national champion Wisconsin-Superior in a nonconference men's hockey game Tuesday night at Wessman Arena.
Brady Fougner (Fr., International Falls, Minn.) added three assists for the Auggies, who improved to 6-3-0 overall with their second straight win and sixth in their last seven games. Wisconsin-Superior fell to 7-2-1 overall, breaking a seven-game unbeaten streak and four-game winning streak in the process.
Despite being outshot by a 49-21 margin, Augsburg converted its shots wisely into goals to claim the upset win on the road over Superior, ranked sixth nationally in the most recent U.S. College Hockey Online Division III poll.
Cesky, this week's MIAC Co-Player of the Week, has at least one point (goal or assist) in Augsburg's last eight straight games, and has had multiple-point nights in five games, including the last three in a row. He scored Augsburg's first goal, on a power-play at the 7:54 mark of the first period, and Augsburg's last goal, at the 2:58 mark of the third period.
After the Yellowjackets took a 2-1 lead two minutes into the second period, Augsburg scored twice to take a lead.
David May (So., Burnsville, Minn.) and
Brad Schwartzbauer (Sr., White Bear Lake, Minn.) scored for the Auggies. Superior tied the game again on a goal from Ryan Kalbrenner, but Augsburg forged ahead again on a goal from
Shawn Smith (Sr., Temagami, Ont./E.C. Drury HS) with 21 seconds left in the frame.
Cesky's second goal of the game gave the Auggies a two-goal lead, but the Yellowjackets cut the lead again on Yann Poirier's power-play goal at the 5:23 mark. However, in spite of outshooting Augsburg 14-4 in the final frame, the hosts couldn't get another shot past Auggie goalie
Erik Young (So., White Bear Lake, Minn.), who improved to 4-1 on the season.
Superior outshot Augsburg in every period -- 16-9 in the first and 19-8 in the second -- but Young was up to the task, making 45 saves to claim the win.
Brad Holzinger (Sr., North Oaks, Minn./Hill-Murray HS) had two assists for the Auggies.
Kalbrenner had a goal and assist for Superior, as did Poirier. Rob Whidden and Colin Kendall had the other Superior goals. Kyle Nosan had two assists.
Mathieu Bonnelly made 16 saves in a losing effort.
Both teams have the Thanksgiving break off. The Auggies are in action at the Air Force Academy (Colo.) Tournament on Dec. 6-7, while Superior hosts MIAC leader Concordia-Moorhead on Dec. 6 at 7 p.m.
