National No. 4 Wisconsin-Stevens Point stops Augsburg, 5-1.

STEVENS POINT, Wis. (11/26/02) -- Ashley Howe scored two goals, leading the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point to a 5-1 win over Augsburg College in a nonconference women's hockey game Tuesday night at Ice Hawks Arena.

Stevens Point, ranked fourth in the country in the most recent U.S. College Hockey Online Division III poll, remained unbeaten at 6-0-1 overall. Augsburg broke a two-game winning streak in falling to 2-6 overall.

After a close first period, the Pointers dominated the remainder of the game, outshooting the Auggies by a 32-5 margin over the final two periods, en route to a 40-8 advantage in shots on goal.

Augsburg used three goalies in the game. Starter Kristin Johnson (So., Minnetonka, Minn./Wayzata HS) played the first period and made seven saves; Laura Hind (So., Lafayette, Colo./Quest Academy HS) played the second period and suffered the loss, making 13 saves; and Katie Fedoryk (Jr., Austin, Minn.) made 15 saves in the third period.

Howe scored the Pointers' first goal at the 4:20 mark of the first period, but Lauren Chezick (So., Hastings, Minn.) tied the game for the Auggies with her sixth goal of the season, on assists from Erika Horner (So., Arvada, Colo./Pomona HS) and Annie Annunziato (Jr., Commack, N.Y.).

However, after that, the game was all Pointers. Tracey Truckey scored on the power play at the 2:29 mark of the second period, followed at the 7:03 mark with Howe's second goal of the game. Jana Jurkovich scored at the 12:45 mark of the second, and Pam Stohr added a power-play goal in the final minute of the third period.

Becky Humphreys had two assists for the Pointers, and Truckey added an assist for a two-point night. Diane Sawyer had to make just seven saves to score the win in goal for Stevens Point.

Augsburg returns to Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference action after the Thanksgiving break with a two-game series against Gustavus Adolphus. The Auggies host Gustavus on Friday, Dec. 6 at 7:05 p.m. at the Augsburg Ice Arena, and play at Gustavus on Saturday, Dec. 7 at 2:05 p.m.
