BOXSCORE
MINNEAPOLIS (11/8/02) -- Five different Augsburg College players scored goals and 10 players figured in the scoring, as Augsburg claimed its first win of the season with a 5-2 triumph over Gustavus Adolphus College in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference men's hockey game Friday night at the Augsburg Ice Arena.
Dave Nelson (Fr., Woodbury, Minn./South St. Paul HS) and
Chad Moore (Sr., Lakeville, Minn.) had two assists apiece for the Auggies, who broke a two-game losing streak in a key early-season MIAC series between two of the conference favorites. Gustavus drops to 0-3 to start the year. Both teams have played all their games in conference action so far. The teams will complete the weekend series Saturday (11/9) at 7 p.m. at the Lund Ice Arena in St. Peter, Minn.
Gustavus scored the first goal of the game at the 1:33 mark, with Zac Headrick (Fr., Burnsville, Minn.) putting his first collegiate goal on the board on an assist from Aaron Allar (Sr., Elxcelsior, Minn.).
After that, it was all Augsburg. The Auggies scored three goals in a 3:44 stretch of the first period, taking a commanding 3-12 lead into the locker room.
Tarik Yumusaklar (Fr., Lakeville, Minn.) scored on assists from
Brad Bjorgum (Jr., Apple Valley, Minn./Eastview HS) at the 12:16 mark, followed by a goal from
Joe Pontrelli (Jr., Eagan, Minn.) and a goal from
Jaro Cesky (Sr., Prague, Czech Republic). Moore and Nelson had assists.
Augsburg's
David May (So., Burnsville, Minn.) scored a power-play goal at the 17:13 mark of the second period, on assists from
Brad Holzinger (Sr., North Oaks, Minn./Hill-Murray HS) and Moore.
Gustavus cut into the advantage late in the game, when Keith Detlefsen (Fr., Lakeville, Minn.) scored his first collegiate goal on assist from Kyle Mennken (So., Plymouth, Minn.) and Tom Awaijane (Jr., Coon Rapids, Minn.) to make it 4-2. But the Gusties took a chance in pulling the goalkeeper for an extra attacker after Detlefsen's goal, and the Auggies made them pay with an empty netter from
Brad Schwartzbauer (Sr., White Bear Lake, Minn), on an assist from Nelson.
Gustavus outshot Augsburg 33-31.
Pete Samargia (Sr., Gilbert, Minn./Eveleth-Gilbert HS) made 31 saves for the Auggies, while Dan Melde (Jr., Maplewood, Minn.) made 26 saves for the Gusties.
