Dave Nelson (Fr., Woodbury, Minn./South St. Paul HS) scored two unassisted power-play goals, and
Tarik Yumusaklar (Fr., Lakeville, Minn.) scored the game-winning goal at the 3:29 mark of overtime, lifting Augsburg College to a 3-2 victory over Gustavus Adolphus College in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference men's hockey game Saturday night at the Don Roberts Rink at Lund Center.
Nelson tied the game with his second unassisted goal at the 7:37 mark of overtime, and Yumusaklar scored the game-winner on an assist from
Jaro Cesky (Sr., Prague, Czech Republic) with 1:31 left in the five-minute overtime session. Nelson's first unassisted goal came at the 17:02 mark of the first period, also on the power play.
Augsburg claimed the series sweep over the Gusties and improved to 2-2 overall and in league play. Gustavus, picked to finish second in the MIAC preseason poll by conference coaches (Augsburg was picked to finish third), was swept for the second straight weekend in league play to fall to 0-4.
Kyle Menken (So., Plymouth, Minn.) scored both Gustavus goals, with a tally from Tom Awaijane (Jr., Coon Rapids, Minn.) and Keith Detlefsen (Fr., Lakeville, Minn.) at the 6:34 mark of the first period, and on a feed from Justin Polich (So., Osseo, Minn.) at the 3:37 mark of the third.
For the fourth straight game, Augsburg was outshot, as Gustavus outshot the Auggies by a 34-26 margin on Saturday.
Pete Samargia (Sr., Gilbert, Minn./Eveleth-Gilbert HS) made 32 saves for the Auggies, while Dan Melde (Jr., Maplewood, Minn.) made 23 saves for the Gusties.
Both teams have non-conference action next weekend. Augsburg plays host to Marian (Wis.) on Friday (11/15) and Saturday (11/16), both at 7 p.m. at the Augsburg Ice Arena. Gustavus hosts Marian on Thursday (11/14) at 7 p.m. The Gusties go on the road for games at Lake Forest (Ill.) on Friday at 7:35 p.m. and at St. Norbert on Saturday at 7 p.m.
