Men's Hockey 12/14/02 -- Augsburg 7, Wisconsin-Stout 3

MINNEAPOLIS (12/14/02) --
Joe Pontrelli (Jr., Eagan, Minn.) scored two goals, and
Brad Holzinger (Sr., North Oaks, Minn./Hill-Murray HS) and
David May (So., Burnsville, Minn.) had a goal and two assists each, as Augsburg College claimed a 7-3 win over the University of Wisconsin-Stout in a nonconference men's hockey game Saturday nigh at the Augsburg Ice Arena.
Augsburg finished the pre-holiday portion of its schedule with an 8-5 overall record, while Wisconsin-Stout dropped to 4-10 overall. The Auggies outshot the Blue Devils by a 40-26 margin in the game.
Pontrelli scored just 29 seconds into the game on a long breakaway pass from May and Holzinger, as the Auggies took command early and held off two Stout comebacks to claim the nonconference win over the Northern Collegiate Hockey Association squad. He added his second goal midway through the second period.
Holzinger, who moved from defense to forward on Augsburg's top line this week, scored for Augsburg at the 10:42 mark of the first, and assisted on two goals. May had two assists in the first two periods, and scored the final goal for the Auggies early in the third period.
Jaro Cesky (Sr., Prague, Czech Republic) gave the Auggies another early-period goal, as he lit the lamp with a quick pop-shot over the goalie's shoulder just 1:43 into the second period. He now has a team-high 11 goals.
Tarik Yumusaklar (Fr., Lakeville, Minn.) and
Shawn Smith (Sr., Temagami, Ontario/E.C. Drury HS) had Augsburg's other goals in the contest.
Sean Donnelly (Sr., Calgary, Alberta/St. Mary's HS) had two assists for the Auggies.
Stout scored at the 11:10 mark of the first period, as Nate Legler (Jr., Lakeville, Minn.) scored from Dan Winkler (Jr., Brooklyn Center, Minn./Maple Grove HS).
The Blue Devils scored twice in the second period, with Andy Jasicki (Jr., New Brighton, Minn./Irondale HS) scoring at the 8:45 mark from Drew Nichols (Sr., Victoria, Minn./Chaska HS), and Justin Huth (Fr., Shakopee, Minn.) scoring from Mitch Kellin (Jr., Cohasset, Minn./Grand Rapids HS) and Mike Elm (Fr., Falcon Heights, Minn./Roseville HS) at the 16:11 mark.
Erik Young (So., White Bear Lake, Minn.) claimed the win in goal for the Auggies, making 23 saves. Stout used two goalies, with starter Jeff Dotson (Jr., Chanhassen, Minn./Chaska HS) taking the loss, making 20 saves in two periods of work. Tim Elde (Fr., Grafton, N.D.) worked the third period, making 13 saves.
Both teams take a break for the holidays. Stout returns to action on Jan. 3, with an 8 p.m. game at St. Olaf, while Augsburg has a break until Jan. 10-11, facing Hamline in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference series. The Friday, Jan. 10 game is at 7 p.m. at the State Fair Coliseum in St. Paul, Minn., with the Saturday, Jan. 11 game at 7 p.m. at the Augsburg Ice Arena.
