Gustavus sends Augsburg to 1-3, topping Augsburg 61-45.

ST. PETER, Minn. (12/4/02) -- The Gustavus Adolphus College women's basketball team opened the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference schedule by defeating Augsburg College 61-45 on Wednesday night in St. Peter. The Gusties were led offensively by junior guard Angie Peterson and junior post Jennifer Klohs, who registered 18 and 17 points respectively.

The Gusties jumped out on top early and never relinquished the lead on their way to their fourth consecutive victory to open the season. Gustavus led by as many as 15 points in the first half en route to a 27-15 halftime lead. The Auggies would get no closer than nine points in the second half of play.

Joining Peterson and Klohs in double figures was Kelly Etzel, who added 11 points and a team-high nine rebounds. The Gusties shot 40.7 percent from the field (24-59). Gustavus had a slight 43-39 rebounding edge over Augsburg. The Gusties had four different players with at least six rebounds.

Augsburg was led by Britni Morgan (Jr., Brooklyn Center, Minn./Robbinsdale Cooper HS), who tallied a double-double with 21 points and 11 rebounds, hitting four 3-pointers. Julie Andert * (Jr., Eden Prairie, Minn.) had 13 points and eight rebounds, and Kelly Chapman * (Jr., Willernie, Minn./Mahtomedi HS) had six points, six rebounds and five steals.

The Auggies shot just 25.0 percent from the field (14-56). Augsburg went without a field goal for nearly six minutes during the first half, allowing Gustavus to increase a three point lead to 14 with just under four minutes left before halftime.

Gustavus (4-0 overall, 1-0 MIAC), which has now won 11 straight home games, continues conference play on Saturday (12/7) by hosting Concordia at 1 p.m. Augsburg (1-3 overall, 0-1 MIAC) has its home opener on Saturday, hosting Carleton at 3 p.m. at Si Melby Hall.
