MINNEAPOLIS (12/6/02) -- Lauren Chezick (So., Hastings, Minn.) scored on a breakaway goal midway through the third period, and Kristin Johnson (So., Minnetonka, Minn./Wayzata HS) made 26 saves to record her second shutout of the season, as Augsburg College claimed a 1-0 win over Gustavus Adolphus College in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference women's hockey game Friday night at the Augsburg Ice Arena.

On a shift midway through the third period, Chezick had lost her stick in the Gustavus zone and went to retrieve it as the puck went into the Augsburg end. As she returned to the neutral zone, Auggie defender Erika Horner (So., Arvada, Colo./Pomona HS) found a wide-open Chezick with a one-time pass across the ice. Chezick broke in all alone on Gustavus goalie Molly O'Donnell (Jr., Minneapolis, Minn./South HS) and deposited a shot in the upper right corner of the net for her seventh goal of the year and her team-high 17th point of the season.

Augsburg improves to 3-6-0 overall and 3-2-0 in MIAC play, while Gustavus drops to 2-4-2 overall and 2-2-1 in MIAC play. After starting the season 0-5, Augsburg has won three of its last four games, all its wins coming in league action.

Augsburg had to rally from a sluggish start, as the Gusties outshot the Auggies 13-5 in the first period and dominated play. Augsburg was also its own victim in the first period, icing the puck on several occasions and keeping the action in its own end.

But after the first period, the tempo shifted to the host Auggies. Augsburg outshot Gustavus 20-13 in the final two periods, including a 12-6 edge in the decisive third period.

Johnson earned her second shutout in just her third start of the season in goal, making 26 saves. O'Donnell made 24 saves for Gustavus.

The teams complete the MIAC series on Saturday (12/7) at 2:05 p.m. at the Lund Ice Arena in St. Peter, Minn.
