Gustavus gains series split with 4-1 home win over Augsburg.

ST. PETER, Minn. (12/7/02) -- The Gustavus Adolphus College womenÂ's hockey team jumped out to a 2-0 lead and held on for an important 4-1 win over Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference rival Augsburg College in a game played at Gustavus' Don Roberts Ice Rink in St. Peter, Minn.

Junior forward Ann Katz tallied two goals and one assist and freshman forward Blair Carlson contributed one goal and one assist to lead the Gusties. Laura Hoffman (Jr., Bloomington, Minn./Kennedy HS) tallied the lone goal for Augsburg.

Gustavus improves to 3-4-2 overall and 3-2-1 in the MIAC, while Augsburg falls to 3-7-0 overall and 3-3-0 in the MIAC. The teams split the weekend series, as Augsburg won 1-0 on Friday night.

After a scoreless first period, Gustavus scored two quick goals early in the second period. The first was a short-handed goal by Laura Stypulkowski at 3:17, and the second was an even strength goal by Katz at 5:05. Augsburg countered with a power-play goal by Hoffman at 12:18. The Gusties held a 2-1 lead after two periods.

The third period was all Gustavus, as the Gusties outshot the Auggies 18-6 and scored two more goals. Blair Carlson extended the Gustie lead to 3-1 with a goal at 4:14, and Katz added an insurance goal, her second of the game, at 18:21.

Molly OÂ'Donnell picked up the win in the nets for Gustavus as she recorded 28 saves while allowing one goal. Katie Fedoryk (Jr., Austin, Minn.), suffered the loss for Augsburg as she surrendered four goals while turning away 36 shots. Gustavus outshot the Auggies 40-29. Augsburg managed one power-play goal in seven opportunities, while the Gusties could not convert on any of their six power-play chances.

Augsburg has a series against Bethel before the holiday break. The Auggies host Bethel on Wednesday (12/11) at 7:05 p.m. at the Augsburg Ice Arena, and face the Royals on the road at Columbia Ice Arena in Fridley, Minn., next Saturday (12/14) at 7 p.m.

Gustavus will close out the 2002 portion of its schedule with a non-conference match-up with the Wisconsin-River Falls at home on Wednesday.
