Women's Basketball 12/9/02 -- Augsburg 50, Macalester 45

ST. PAUL, Minn. (12/9/02) --
Britni Morgan (Jr., Brooklyn Center, Minn./Robbinsdale Cooper HS) broke a 45-45 deadlock with a three-point shot with 54 seconds remaining, as Augsburg College (2-4, 1-2 MIAC) went on to gain a 50-45 Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference women's basketball win over Macalester College Monday night at Macalester Gymnasium.
Morgan, who went 4-for-8 from three-point range, finished with a team-high 20 points to go along with four steals. Teammate
Kelly Chapman * (Jr., Willernie, Minn./Mahtomedi HS) added 13 points and six rebounds, and
Julie Andert * (Jr., Eden Prairie, Minn.) grabbed 10 rebounds and five steals to go with four points.
Afton Hanson scored 22 points, knocking down 4-of-8 from behind the arc, to pace Macalester (0-5, 0-3 MIAC). Sara Entgelmeier and Sarah Hesch pulled down eight rebounds apiece.
Augsburg led 24-18 at halftime, as Morgan had 10 points. The Auggies pulled away to a nine-point lead early in the second half, but Macalester ralled to tie the game and eventually take a five-point lead, 38-33, with 7:29 left.
From that point, Augsburg went on a 12-2 run over the next five minutes, as Morgan scored five points, Chapman had four points and
Katie Kelsey (So., Burnsville, Minn.) hit a three-pointer.
Hanson scored the next five points of the game on two free throws and a three-pointer, giving the Scots the fourth tie of the game at 45-45 with 1:16 left. But Morgan scored the final five points of the game, hitting the game-winning three-pointer with 54 seconds left and making two free throws with 15 seconds left.
Both teams return to action on Wednesday (12/11), Augsburg hosting St. Benedict at Si Melby Hall at 7:30 p.m., and Macalester hosting Concordia-Moorhead at 5:30 p.m.
