Kleewein scores twice, Augsburg slams St. Catherine 6-1!

MINNEAPOLIS (2/14/02) -- Melynda Kleewein (Fr., Anchorage, Alaska/Dimond HS) scored two goals and had an assist for a three-point night, leading Augsburg College to a dominating 6-1 victory over the College of St. Catherine in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference women's hockey game Thursday night at the Augsburg Ice Arena.

After giving up the first four shots of the game over the first six minutes, the Auggies dominated from that point on, outshooting St. Catherine by a 33-27 mark and scoring two goals in each period. Augsburg improves to 8-12-2 overall and 7-7-1 in the MIAC with the win, remaining in contention for the final spot in the MIAC's five-team postseason playoffs. St. Catherine, playing with just 11 skaters and two goalies Thursday night, drops to 9-12-1 overall and 5-10-1 in the MIAC.

Annie Mattison (Sr., Anchorage, Alaska/East HS) added three assists for the Auggies, while Lauren Chezick (Fr., Hastings, Minn.) had a goal and two assists. Jenny Martin (Fr., Plymouth, Minn./Wayzata HS) had a goal and assist.

Martin and Chezick scored in a 4:10 span midway through the first period. Laura McGowan (Sr., Fridley, Minn./Spring Lake Park HS) scored an unassisted goal at the 10:20 mark of the second period, followed just 1:02 later by Kleewein's first goal of the game.

Angie Carstenbrock (Fr., South St. Paul, Minn.) scored St. Catherine's lone goal with 37 seconds left in the second period, on assists from Jill Ament (So., Jamestown, N.D.) and Melanie Schulte (Sr., Omaha, Neb.).

Dietrich and Kleewein scored for the Auggies in the third period to complete the Auggie scoring.

Katie Fedoryk (So., Austin, Minn.) made 26 saves to pick up the win for the Auggies, while Kendra Maxson (So., Conover, Wis./Eagle River HS) made 27 saves for the Wildcats.

The two teams complete the series on Saturday (2/16) at 4:45 p.m. at the Drake Ice Arena in St. Paul, Minn.
