Augsburg's season ends with 5-1 loss at Gustavus.

ST. PETER, Minn. (2/23/02) -- The Gustavus Adolphus College women's hockey team put an exclamation point on its second consecutive Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference title with a convincing 5-1 win over Augsburg College at Don Roberts Ice Rink on Saturday afternoon.

The Gusties, now 20-3-2 overall and 17-0-1 in the MIAC, held a slim 1-0 lead after the first period, but tallied three goals in the second period to take a commanding 4-1 lead after 40 minutes of play. Sophomore forward Ann Katz (So., New Brighton, Minn./Mahtomedi HS) led Gustavus with two goals and one assist.

Augsburg's lone goal was scored by Dottie Gilkerson (So., Somerset, Wis.). Augsburg finished the season 9-14-2 overall and 8-9-1 in the MIAC, falling one point short of qualifying for the five-team MIAC postseason playoffs.

Katz opened the scoring with a goal at 13:07 of the first period with assists from Sarah Moe (Sr., West Des Moines, Iowa/Valley HS) and Katie Deschenau (So., Arden Hills, Minn./Mounds View HS). Gustavus ncreased its lead to 2-0 when Katz scored her second goal at 1:02 of the second period with Deschneau and Moe picking up the assists again. The Gusties pushed their lead to 4-0 in the second period with goals by Deschneau at 5:58 and Nicole Guimond (Jr., Orono, Minn.) at 10:01. Deschneau's goal included assists to Katz and Moe, while Guimond's goal included an assist from Laura Stypulkowski (Fr., White Bear Lake, Minn.).

Augsburg trimmed the lead to 4-1 with a goal by Gilkerson at 19:37 of the second period. Assists were credited to April Leger (Sr., Austin, Minn.) and Annie Mattison (Sr., Anchorage, Alaska/East HS).

Gustavus closed out the scoring with a goal by Anna Stenstrom at 5:49 of the third period. Kenzie Stensland picked up an assist.

The Gusties outshot Augsburg 42-17 in the contest. Gustavus netminder Molly O'Donnell (So., Minneapolis, Minn./South HS) recorded 16 saves, while Augsburg goaltender Katie Fedoryk (So., Austin, Minn.) turned away 37 shots.

Gustavus senior captains Moe and Mickenzie Stensland (Sr., Stillwater, Minn.) played their final home regular season game for the Gusties. Moe, the school's all-time leading scorer with 136 points (76g, 60a), became only the fourth player at Gustavus to score 50 points in a season. She has currently tallied 27 goals and 23 assists for 50 points. Moe also won the MIAC scoring title with 22 goals and 20 assists for 42 points. Stensland pushed her overall season stats to 19 goals and 18 assists for 37 points with one assist in the game. Stensland finished fourth in the MIAC in scoring with 19 goals and 14 assists for 33 points.

The game alsowas the final game of the careers of six Auggie seniors -- Kristi Brusletto (Sr., Basalt, Colo.), Katie Cheese (Sr., Shakopee, Minn.), April Leger (Sr., Austin, Minn.), Rachel Leger (Sr., Austin, Minn.), Annie Mattison (Sr., Anchorage, Alaska/East HS) and Laura McGowan (Sr., Fridley, Minn./Spring Lake Park HS). The seniors accumulated a 55-29-4 record during their four seasons at Augsburg, and have earned two MIAC regular-season titles, an MIAC playoff title (2000) and a Division III national second-place finish (2000).

Gustavus will now advance to the MIAC Playoffs next Friday and Saturday at the Schwan's Super Rink in Blaine. The Gusties will play the winner of the Concordia/St. Ben's game which will be played Tuesday (2/26) in Moorhead, Minn. Augsburg finishes its season in sixth place in the MIAC.
