ST. PAUL, Minn. (2/6/02) --
Kelly Chapman (So., Willernie, Minn./Mahtomedi HS) claimed the fourth double-double of her career with 20 points and 11 rebounds, leading Augsburg College to a 71-64 win over the College of St. Catherine in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference women's basketball game Wednesday night at CSC's Butler Center.
Chapman was one of four Auggies to score in double figures, as the Auggies pulled away from a 30-30 halftime tie to improve to 8-14 overall and 7-12 in MIAC play. St. Catherine dropped to 7-15 overall and 4-15 in MIAC play.
Chapman scored in double figures for the 15th time in Augsburg's 22 games this season and the 25th time in her 45-game career. She scored 20 points or more for the fourth time this year and fifth time in her career, and pulled down 10-plus rebounds for the fifth time this season and in her career. It was the 14th time this season (15th in her career) that she had seven or more rebounds in a game.
Augsburg used an 11-2 run to take an eight-point lead, 21-13, with 8:13 left in the first half.
Julie Andert (So., Eden Prairie, Minn.) scored five points and Chapman had four points in the run. But the Wildcats came back to tie the game at halftime, outscoring the Auggies 6-2 in the final 1:50.
The Auggies took the lead for good midway through the second half, though the Wildcats kept it close until the closing minutes. Leading by just a 63-62 margin with 1:52 left, Augsburg hit three-pointers on consecutive possessions from
Shannon Spears (Jr., Champlin, Minn./Champlin Park HS) and
Britni Morgan (So., Brooklyn Center, Minn./Robbinsdale Cooper HS) to give the Auggies a five-point lead with 36 seconds left. Morgan added a layup in the final seconds for the final margin of victory
Morgan had 16 points for the Auggies, hitting three 3-pointers. Spears scored 13 points, and Andert had 10 points adn seven rebounds.
Amanda Haugen (Fr., Kenyon, Minn./Kenyon-Wanamingo HS) had six points and seven rebounds.
St. Catherine was paced by Sharisse Heiderscheidt (Jr., Sleepy Eye, Minn.), who scored 13 points. Lisa Juth (Fr., Coon Rapids, Minn.) had 11 points and nine rebounds, and Jennifer Gruenhagen (Fr., Minneapolis, Minn.) hit 10 points. Kate Stodolka (So., Coon Rapids, Minn.) had eight points, and Katie Jones (So., Alpha, Minn.) had six points, seven rebounds and three blocked shots.
Both teams return to MIAC action on the road on Saturday (2/9) at 3 p.m. Augsburg plays at St. Benedict, and St. Catherine plays at Gustavus.
