Cross Country 8/30/02 -- Augsburg vs. Bethel
MINNEAPOLIS (8/30/02) -- Augsburg College opened its cross country season with a strong performance, sweeping a men's and women's dual meet from Bethel on Friday morning at Riverside Park. The Auggie men won their meet by a 27-30 margin, while Augsburg's women topped Bethel 26-29.
Ryan Nevin (Jr., Barron, Wis.) breezed to an easy win in his first 5,000-meter Auggie race (collegiate men normally run 8,000-meter races), cruising in 16 minutes, 29 seconds, well ahead of teammates
George Spears (Jr., Minneapolis, Minn./South HS), who placed second in 16:52, and
Dan Vogel (So., LaCrescent, Minn.), who placed third in 16:53.
Bethel's men finished in the next five spots, with Brent Warren leading the way in fourth in 17:01. Adam Erickson ran in 17:08 to take fifth and Dan Tavenier placed sixth in 17:37.
On the women's side, Bethel's Anna Gunderson won the 5,000-meter race in 20:48, six seconds ahead of Augsburg's second-place finisher,
Hannah Dietrich (So., Luverne, Minn.), in 20:54. Dietrich tied a personal-best with her run. Newcomer
Angie Bergeson (Fr., Red Wing, Minn.) finished in third for the Auggies in 20:56. Janet Dieter ran fourth for Bethel in 21:27, and
Andrea Carlson (So., Maplewood, Minn./Visitation HS) ran fifth for Augsburg in 21:38.
Augsburg had six men and nine women run in the race at Riverside Park, Augsburg's normal training home. It was Augsburg's first home cross country meet in recent memory.
Amy Mackner (Jr., Barnesville, Minn.) and
Rhia Gronberg (Jr., Austin, Texas/A.S. Johnson HS) ran collegiate personal bests for the Auggie women, Mackner bettering her previous mark by 1:34 with a 22:09 finish, and Gronberg bettering her previous mark by 20 seconds with a 23:26 effort.
Augsburg returns to action on Sept. 21, competing at the New York University Invitational in New York, N.Y. Bethel competes at the St. John's Invitational on Sept. 7 in Collegeville, Minn.
