MINNEAPOLIS (9/21/02) -- Pepe Jon Chavez (Sr., Lima, Peru/Shorewood HS) scored a hat trick and added an assist for a seven-point afternoon, leading Bethel College to a 6-1 rout of host Augsburg College in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference men's soccer match Saturday afternoon at Augsburg's Edor Nelson Field.
All three of Chavez's goals were unassisted, as the Royals improved to 2-3-1 overall and 1-1 in MIAC play. Augsburg drops to 2-4-2 overall and 0-1-1 in the MIAC.
Chavez scored his first goal eight minutes into play on a move in front past goalkeeper
Han Zeller (Jr., Waseca, Minn.). Justin Sutkowski (Sr., Naperville, Ill./Naperville North HS) scored a goal from Jered Schock (Sr., Soux Falls, S.D./Sioux Falls Christian HS) in the 15th minute. Chavez opened the second half with two goals in a six-minute span, and later assisted on a goal from Mathew Johnson (So., Bourbonnais, Ill./BBCHA HS). Maurice Ndjouma (So., Yauonde, Cameroon) scored in the final three minutes from Steve Adamis (Sr., Naperville, Ill./Naperville North HS).
Augsburg's lone goal came from
Mike Elcano (So., Sparks, Nev./Bishop Manogue HS), who scored on a break in the middle from
Matt Lachner (Jr., Maple Grove, Minn.) in the 58th minute.
Eric Berg (So., Hastings, Minn.) made five saves to pick up the win in goal for Bethel. Zeller made three saves in the first half for Augsburg, with
Chad Clausen (Fr., St. Paul, Minn./Highland Park HS) making one save in the second half. Bethel outshot Augsburg by a 16-13 margin.
Both teams return to action on Thursday (9/26) at 1 p.m., Augsburg hosting Macalester at 7:30 p.m. and Bethel hosting St. Scholastica.
